JOHN FRANKLIN ALRED, born 1853 in Georgia was a laborer in Decatur County, and removed to Taylorsville, near Cartersville, Ga. A sensational case was heard in Bartow Co., Ga. against John Franklin Alred, charged with murdering his wife, Cora, at their home on the morning of November 1, 1906.
His daughter, Lula, aged 16, witnessed the murder in the bedroom of her parents. Alred testified that between 2 and 3 o'clock in the morning he awoke, missing his wife, and taking his shotgun from the wall, he slipped out in the moonlight, when he saw the form of a man retreating from the chicken house in the yard.
Shortly afterwards, he declared that he came upon his wife near the spot where he had first seen the man. He then took her into the house, taking his gun from the wall (it was charged) as he screamed, protesting her innocence. He advanced upon her until he had forced his wife to the foot of the bed that was occupied by 16-year old daughter, who began pleading with her son not to shoot her mother. Then Alred turned the gun upon his wife, threating to shoot her. The daughter covered her head with clothing. Alred placed the muzzle of the gun close to the left side of his wife and pulled the trigger. Source: Atlanta Georgian, published 1/26/1907.
