Adams of South Carolina, North Carolina; Chattahoochee,Hall, Muscogee & Twiggs Counties, Georgia



Richard Adams was born ca 1730 and came to Richland County, South Carolina in 1770. He was listed as an early landowner in the History of Richland County by Edwin L. Green, i. e.: "Richard Adams, 150 acres, September 10, 1770." "....the following is a list of persons who received pay for clothing, who are not included in Sumters list and special bounty: Richard Adams, et al." South Carolinians in the Revolution by Ervin. The LWT of Richard Adams was dated 28 October 1778, probated on 19 February 1788 in Richland County, South Carolina Will Book B, page 19. It named his wife, Mary and son, Abraham Adams, as executrix and executor. The children not named in the LWT were: William and James, substantiated by the LWT of the son of Richard, Richard Adams, in Will Book A, Richland County, page 45, dated 11 January 1803, probated 2 January 1807, in which his children, William Adams and Rachell Bryson were named, along with his wife, Jane, and his four brothers, viz: John Carroll Adams, William Adams, James Adams and Abraham Adams; brother-in-law: John Bryson. Issue of Richard Adams:

B. Rachel Adams married John Bryson.

V. John Carroll Adams, Revolutionary War Soldier from South Carolina served under Captain William McKinzey. He inherited land in Beaufort County, North Carolina from his father and moved there sometime after 1790. Issue:

A. Richard Adams was born 1796 in Richland County, South Carolina and removed with his parents to Beaufort County, North Carolina to settle on the lands which his grandfather (Richard Adams) bequeathed to his father. He apparently married Catherine (born 1805 in Jones County, North Carolina) either in Beaufort or Jones County, North Carolina prior to 1820, because in 1821 he drew in the Georgia Land Lottery, listing himself as a resident of Hall County. The land which he drew was located in Houston County, which he never settled. In 1820 he was listed on the Hall County, Georgia Census, and in 1832 when he drew in the Land Lottery he was a resident of Clarke County. From 1832-1834, he was a resident of Jones County. Deed transactions dating 1834-1836 were found for him in Muscogee County. In 1836, he was attached to the 37th Regiment Cavalry. [1] In 1840, he was listed in Twiggs County; 1850 in Muscogee County; and 1860 on the Chattahoochee County, Georgia Census Records. Issue:[2]

1. Edwin Adams was born 1812 in Richland, Richland County, South Carolina and was married Sarah Fisher (born 1807 in Georgia) ca 1832/1835 in Twiggs County, Georgia. He was a resident of Chattahoochee County where he died in 1870. His LWT dated 5 December 1870, recorded in Book A (1854-1935), page 68-69, named his wife, Sarah, and daughters: Jane Wilson, Frances E. Cody, Catherine A. Lightner and Mary F. Adams; and son, James P. Adams. Issue:[3]
a. Mary Adams, born 1831 in Georgia.

b. Charles Adams, born 1832 in Georgia.

c. Augusta Adams, born 1840 in Georgia.

d. Philip Adams, born 1848 in Twiggs County.

e. James P. Adams.

f. Jane Adams married Thomas Wilson. Issue:

i. William T. Wilson.

ii. Laura Wilson married Mr. Fussell.

iii. Sallie Wilson married C. W. Johnson.

iv. Charles Wilson.

v. James E. Wilson.

vi. Mary Ida Wilson.

g. Frances Adams married (1) David C. Cody, a son of Lawson Cody and (2) John Smith.

h. Catherine Augusta Adams, born 16 December 1850 near Columbus, Georgia (formerly Muscogee County, later Chattahoochee County), died 14 January 1891, buried on the Ft. Benning Reservation in Chattahoochee County, Cemetery #1. She married James Marion Lightner. She is of record in Chattahoochee County, Georgia Will Book A (1854-1935). After the death of Catherine, Lightner married Ellen Smith, a sister of Willis M. Smith, whom he made guardian of his children in his LWT. He bequeathed his plantation near Jamestown, Georgia of 970 acres to his minor children, viz: Alice, Mary Ella and Clark. Also named in his LWT dated 28 June 1900 were Ennis M. and Charlie Adams. 3. William D. Adams, born 1834 in Twiggs County, Georgia, farmer.

4. Daniel I. Adams, born 1836 in Twiggs County, Georgia.

5. Richard M. Adams, born 1837 in Twiggs County, Georgia.

6. John C. Adams, born 1838 in Twiggs County, Georgia.

7. Robert R. Adams, born 1841 in Twiggs County, Georgia.
