Richard Adams of Richland County, South Carolina


The progenitor of Adams families in Jones, Muscogee, Twiggs, and Chattahoochee Counties in Ga. was Richard Adams of Richland Co., South Carolina. He was found to be listed as an early landowner in Richland Co. in 1770 as having 150 acres (10 Sept 1770).

South Carolinians in the Revolution by Ervin:

"The following is a list of persons who received pay for clothing -who are not included in Sumter's list and special bounty: Rtchard Adams, etc."


The LWT of Richard Adams dtd 18 Oct 1787, probated 19 Feb 1788 Richland Co., S. C., recorded WB B, P. 19, names w., Mary and son, Abraham, exrs. Also named are his children, except William and James, who are proven to be his children by LWT of Richard Adams, Jr. dtd 1/11/1803, pvd 1/2/1807 Richland Co., S. C., naming children: William Adams and Rachel Bryson, his wife, Jane, and four bros., i.e., John Carroll Adams, William Adams, James Adams and Abraham Adams, and bro-in-law, John Bryson. Issue of Richard Adams, Sr. follows:

III. Richard Adams, Jr., LWT dtd 1/11/1803, pvd 1/2/1807 Rtchland Co., S. C., w., Jane. Issue: William Adams and Rachell Bryson. Richard m. Jane Bryson, sister of John Bryson.

V. James Adams.

VI. John Carroll Adams, Rev. War Soldier in S. C., served under William McKinzey, inherited land in Beaufort Co., N. C. from his father. He was J. P. in Richland Co., S. C. 1801. Issue follows:

A. Richard Adams, b. 1796 Richland Co., S. C. He was listed on the 1850 Muscogee Co., Ga. Census. His w., Catherine, b. 1805 Jones Co., Ga. He drew in 1821 Ga. land lottery, resident of Hall Co., land in Houston Co., which he never took up. He was listed on 1820 Hall Co. Census and drew in 1832 land lottery, Clarke Co. From 1832 to 1834 he was resident of' Jones Co., Ga., having deed transactions in Muscogee Co. from 1834 to 1836, and was found on 1840 Twiggs Co. Census, 1850 Muscogee and 1860 Chattahoochee Co., Ga. Census.

2. George Adams, b. 1819 Richland Co., S. C., listed 1850 Muscogee Co. Ga. Census wittl w., Malinda J., b. 1824 Washington Co., Ga. Issue: Eugenia, b. 1846 Talbot Co.; Thomas M., b. 1847 Talbot Co..; infant daughter b. 1850 Muscogee Co.
4. William D. Adams b. 1834 Twiggs Co.

5. Daniel Adams b. 1836 Twiggs Co.

6. Richard M. Adams b. 1837 Twiggs Co.

7. John C. Adams b. 1838 Twiggs Co.

8. Susan Adams b. 1833 Twiggs Co. m. Mr. Banister. She was living with her parents in 1850.

9. Edwin Adams b. 1812 Richland Co., S. C. m. Sarah Fisher of Twiggs Co. They were listed on the 1860 Chattahoochee Co., Ga. Census. His LWT dated 5 Dec 1870 Chattahoochee Co., Ga., Book A, 1854-1935, p. 68-69, names wife, Sarah, and children, viz: Jane Wilson, James P. Adams, Frances E. Cody, Catherine A. Lightner, Mary F Adams. The History of Twiggs County states that Susan Fisher m. Edwin Adams and they had issue as follows:
a. Jane Adams m. Thomas Wilson, having issue: William T. Wilson, Laura Wilson m. W. B. Fussell, Sallie Wilson m. C. W. Johnson, Charles Wilson, James E. Wilson and Mary Ida Wilson.

b. James Adams.

c. Philip Adams.

d. Frances Adams m. 1st, David C. Cody, son of Lawson Cody, and m. 2nd, John Smith.

e. Catherine Augusta Adams m. J. M. Lightner. She was born 1850 in Columbus, Muscogee Co., Ga., d. 14 Jan 1891. She m. James Marion Lightner, b. 1836, d. 1909, his LWT recorded in Chattahoochee Co., Ga. Will Book A (1854-1935). After Catherine's death, he m. Ellen Smith, a sister of Willis M. Smith, whom he made guardian of his children in his LWT dated 28 June 1900 His plantation was located near Jamestown, Georgia, and consisted of 970 acres of land, which he bequeathed to his minor children, i. e.: Alice, Mary Ella, and Clark. Also named were Ennis M. and Charlie.
