HOPEWELL ADAMS Genealogy of North Carolina and Georgia



Hopewell Adams, a son of Hopewell and Elizabeth Adams of Edgecombe County, North Carolina, was was born 22 June 1769 in Edgecombe Co., North Carolina. His father's LWT dated 1799 Edgecombe Co., North Carolina, named sons, James and William. Hopewell probably came to Georgia about that time. He drew in the 1805 Georgia Land Lottery, Washington Co.; and was listed on the 1820-40 Washington Co. Census. He died June 1847 Washington Co. Washington County records burned, however, the following reference to his estate...See Bk A, P. 64-5, Divisions, Washington Co., 1829-71:
"By virtue of an Order from the Honorable Court of said county sitting for ordinary purposes on the first day of November instant,.. .authorizing and requiring us to make a distribution of the estate of the late Hopewell Adams, deceased, among the distributees of said estate...We ascertained There were eleven distributees, to-wit: William D. Jordan, James Adams, Abijah Wiggins, the children of John W. Adams, deceased, Arnold L. Adams, Benjamin Adams, Thomas Jordan, the children of Nancy Jordan, deceased, Hopewell Adams, Jordan P. Adams and William Tanner." The property consisted of slaves.

IX. Arnold L. Adams m. Nancy Gilmore 7/30/1829 Washington Co., Ga. Bk A, P. 121, Washington Co. Divisions., 1829-71, Dec. Term 1852, an Order of Ct. to divide negroes of esate of Arnold L. Adams between the distributees, to-wit: Nancy D. Adams, wid. and relict of Arnold L. Adams, decd.; Thomas J. Adams, son of said deceased of full age; and Ann Frances Adams; Virginia Adams; Mary Ann Adams; and Venessa Adams, minor children of 3d Arnold L. Adams, decd, whose interest in sd distribution represented by Thomas J. Adams, gdn of sd minors.

X. Benjamin Adams m. Ardeman Tanner 3/7/1829 Washington Co., Ga. The LWT of Benjamin Adams recorded P. 170, Bk B, Washington Co. Wills, dtd 10/12/1863, naming w., Ardelia, and son, Irwin L. Adams. Kin to this family was John Adams, b. 1770/1780, d. 1836 Monroe Co., Ga., w., Margaret, b. 1774. George Adams and Martin Adams were sec. on est. bond given for $2000 1/4/1836 Monroe Co., with George Adams, admr. John Adams was in Monroe Co., Ga. by 1822. Monroe Co. DB B, P. 193, 5/18/1822, George Miller and his wife of Chatham Co. to John Adams of Savannah, land in 8th dist. of Henry Co., Lot 241. George Mi ller also deeded to John Adams land in 15th dist. Houston Co., being Lot 77, and land in 12th dist. Houston Co., land in 6th dist. Henry Co., 15th dist. of Houston Co., 11th Dist. Dooly Co., 16th Dist. Henry Co., 2d Dist. Monroe Co. There was deed dtd 1/7/1824, Bk B, P. 204-5, Monroe Co. of John Brigham of Burke Co. to John Adams of Savannah, 202 1/2 acres in Monroe Co. John Adams drew in 1827 land lottery, Monroe Co., land in Lee Co. His wid., Margaret, b. 1774 Ga., was listed on 1850 Monroe Co. Census in household of her son, George Adams. Issue of George Adams follows:

A. George Adams, b. 1806 S. C. m. 4/8/1828 Elbert Co., Ga., Jemima Anderson, b. 1806 Ga. Listed 1840-50 Monroe Co. Census. His family removed to Henry Co. where his widow, Jemima Adams, was listed on 1860 Census in the home of S. M. Ellis, age 34, and w., Lucinda M., age 25. George Adams d. 1855 Henry Co., Ga.. Robert M. Adams given powerof attorney on 7/1/1855, and apptd admr. Inv. and Appr. given 10/17/1855, Bk C, P.322, Henry Co. Ga. Issue of George Adams follows:
1. Robert Adams, b. 1830 Monroe Co. Ga.

2. Lucinda M. Adams, b. 1835 Monroe Co. m. 8/17/1856 Shadrick M. Ellis, Henry Co., and had issue: George W. Ellis, b. 1848; Mary J. Ellis, b. 1850 Henry Co., Ga.

3. John M. Adams, b. 1837 Monroe Co., listed in the home of his sister, Lucinda on 1860 Henry Co. census.

4. James Adams, b. 1843 Monroe Co., Ga., listed in home of sister, as above.
