1745-1747 Savannah Town Lots

Baillou, Peter 450 a. north end of White Marsh Island, but he is already possessed of a town, garden and farm Lot in Savannah. Granted 300 acres. 6 January 1747.

Campshire, Christian for Lot in Savannah, Lot No. 7, Fourth Tything in Upper New Ward, together with Garden Lott and Farm Lot. 26 July 1745.

Dobell, John, Lot No. 1, first Tything of Lower New Ward (late Thomas Mansor Causton) together with garden and farm lots. Granted. 5 March 1746.

Holbrook, Jacob for Lot in Town of Savannah, No. 6, Fourth Tything, Upper New Ward. 3 December 1745.

1756 Savannah Lot Owners

Lot No. F. 31 March 1756 the western half of Lot No. F of Alexander Kellett was sold to Raymond Demere who was granted the eastern half 15 May 1756. Then on 21 June 1759 Demere sold it to Samuel Cardy and on 20 May 1760 Cardy sold it to Thomas Lloyd. 27 April 1771 Rebecca Lloyd, the widow of Thomas, sold it to John Eppinger, a bricklayer, Matthias Ash, vidualler, keeper of tavern, George Duckner, butcher, John Sheek, wheelwright, Adam Eirick, vidualler, Frederick Famm, blacksmith, and John Heidlinger, painter, all of Savannah with the stipulation that the Lot be used for a place of worship, the Lutheran Church of the Ascension.

Lot No. G. In 1741 the Trustees house (Bradleys Great House) stood on this Lot. The Council met here until 1756 when they moved to the Filature (Lot No. 5, Reynolds Square).

Lot No. H. The first courthouse was built in 1736.

Lot No. I. Henry Ellis, the second Royal Governor of Georgia (1756-176) was granted Lots No. I and L (Part of St. Julyian Street).

Lot No. P. John Hamm and William Ewen. John Hamon arrived in 1754 from St. Christophers Island and petitioned for 500 acres and later for a half Lot in Savannah (Lot P) fronting to the eastward on the square in Heathcote Ward. William Ewen arrived in Georgia in 1734, as a basket weaver and servant of Thomas Causton. 21 June 1775 he was appointed a member of the Council of Safety, then President. In 1755 Hamm and Ewen were Collectors and Assessors for the Town and Districts of Abercorn and Goshen.

Lot No. S. The Filature Lot, establishing for the reeling of silk. The building was constructed in 1751. The Council met here until the State House was built on Lot V prior to the burning of the Filature in 1758.

Lot No. W. William Bachshall, a large land owner, and Sir Patrick Houstoun. In 1756 Bachshall was granted the eastern 90 feet and Houstoun the western 90 feet. Houstoun was President of the King’s Council and Receiver of Quit Claims.

Lot No. X. Henry Yonge and William DeBrahm, 1754 surveyors for Georgia.

Lot No. Z. John Reynolds, Captain of the Royal Navy, was appointed the first Royal Governor 6 August 1754.

1759 Savannah Wharf Lots

220-230 East Bay Street, Wharf Lot 1, East of Bull Street granted by Governor to Edward Somerville and sold in 1765 by his estate to James Read at public sale. August 5 and 6, 1777 it was leased by James Read to Jacob Read. In 1799 Jacob Read, son, sold the Lot to Alexander Watt.

208-218 East Bay Street, Wharf Lot 2, East of Bull Street Coffee House. October 1759 granted by the Crown to David Cunningham. September 1765 granted to David Cunningham by power of attorney of James E. Powell. In 1770 James E. Powell and his wife leased to John Ward, and John Ward leased to Peter Henry Morel. The lot was confiscated from John Ward and sold at public outcry 13 June 1782 for 60 pounds sterling. In June of 1789 Peter Morel deeded to Alexander Watts for 300 pounds; in 1793 Mary Alexander Watt deeded to William Greenwood of Charles Towne, and gave a mortage for 351 pounds. 13 May 1795 Mary Alexander Watt leased to William Ewing, one third part, one half of wharf stores, blacksmith shop and every other of the appurtenances thereunto being, for 1500 pounds yearly. September 1795 Alexander Watt deeded to Thomas McCall one third of lot for $4,285.11, then Thomas McCall deeded to Eliza Mary Ann Smith, spinister of Liberty County, an undivided one third interest as part of a marriage settlement.

122-130 East Bay Street, Wharf Lot 4, East of Bull Street. In May of 1761 Francis Blake deeded to Wylly Wood of Somerville, land sold for creditors. August 1792 a petition was made for parks. 10 October 1792 the petition of Noble Wymberly Jones for East half of Lot 4; George Jones, for West half Lot No. 4. In 1797 Noble Wymberly Jones and wife deeded to George Jones, the east half portion of Lot 4.

112-120 East Bay, Wharf Lot 5, East of Bull Street. 13 April 1761, the Governor and Council granted to James Edward Powell; 13 July 1768 James Edward Powell sold to James Read.

Wharf Lot 7, East of Bull. Granted by the crown to Thomas Hooper. 13 January 1783. On 19 April 1775 Samuel Douglas was banished from the colony and the lot was sold at auction to William O. Bryan for 648 pounds. January 1785 William O. Bryan sold it to Levi Sheftall. June 1789 a marriage Settlement between Henrietta O. Bryan and John Morel, in Trust with John McQueen and Alexander McQueen for use of Henrietta.

12-26 East Bay Street, Wharf Lot 8, East of Bull Street. In 1759 the crown granted to Lewis Johnson. Nov 1769 Lewis Johnson and his wife deeded to Greenwood & Higgison. Nov 1795, the Estate of W. Ross deeded to David Johnson, and Johnson deed to William Clark.

Wharf Lot 2, West of Bull. December 1756 the crown granted to John Bailey; Aug 1766 Bailey granted to Samuel Kremer; 9 Nov 1772 Kremer sold to Richard Wight; January 1774 Richard Wight sold to Daniel Wallace.

116-130 West Bay Street, Wharf Lot 4, West of Bull. July 1760 crown granted to William Handley; October 1765 William Handley sold to Francis Arren; March 1770, Arren sold to Samuel Farley and March 1770 Farley sold to Elliot Gray.

12-18 West Bay Street, Wharf Lot 5, West of Bull Street. July 1760 crown granted to Mordecai Sheftall;*(Mordecai Sheftall, born in Savannah, died of apoplexy 6 July 1797 at his home in Savannah, where he was a Magistrate. Georgia Gazette 7 July 1797. Lt. Benjamin Sheftall, age 27, the second son of Mordecai Sheftall of Savannah, died 8 Aug 1794 while onboard the schooner Industry. Savannah Gazette 30 October 1794) May 1770 Sheftall sold to Grey Elliott; May 1770 Grey Elliott and wife sold to W. Cropst, and W. E. Telfair.
