Marion County Probate Records

This region was known as Queensboro in 1733. Marion County was not officially created until 1785 as the county of Liberty in old Georgetown District, one of the original judicial districts created in 1769. In 1798 when courthouse districts were created in South Carolina, the name Marion District was named after General Francis Marion who was born in St. John's Parish, near Georgetown, South Carolina.

Early settlers: William Britton, Joseph Burch, John Burnett, Joshua Dennis, James Crawford, Joseph Gregg, William Griggs, James Keen, Edwards Owens, Daniel Stone, Anthony Sweet, Jesse Wiggins.

Genealogy Tips . . . Georgetown County should be researched along with Marion County. This region was full of soldiers during the Revolutionary War period, especially around King's Mountain.
