GAINES, James was born in Laurens district, South Carolina in 1791, a son of Richard Gaines. "He was a soldier in the War of 1812 and fought the Indians in South Ga., and Fla. He married Margaret Clore about 1812 and selling his farm in Laurens at a loss in the 30's, he and his family and slaves removed to Georgia, working on rented lands near Adairsville on the old Hamilton-Fitten place.
