CAVENDER, Joseph. "Ezekiel Cavender came from England to Maryland and settled in Westmoreland Co., VA., about 1770, where five children were born: Catherine in 1783, Elijay Cornwall in Dinwiddie Co., VA, and in 1804 was in Hog Mountain area of what became Gwinnett, along with her younger brother, Joseph Cavender. COBB, Howell, his photograph (painting) placed inthe Boys' High School, Atlanta, in 1900. He was the son of John Addison Cobb of GranvilleCounty, North Carolina, and his mother was Sarah Rootes, the daughter of Colonel Thomas ReadeRootes of Fredericksburg, Virginia. Howell was graduated in 1834 from FranklinCollege, afterwards known as the University of Georgia. He married in 1835 at the age of nineteen, hisbride being seventeen, Miss Mary Ann Lamar, daughter of Colonel Zacharias Lamar of Milledgeville. Hewas admitted to the bar in 1836 and was elected solicitor general in 1837, and to congress in 1844-1848-1848, andspeaker of the house in 1849. Three years later he was appointed secretary of the treasuryin President Buchanan's cabinet, which position he resigned in 1860. COLE, R. S....."a grandson of Robert and Elizabeth (Fambrel) Cole, Virginians, who were among the early settlers of Newton county, Ga., and later moved to Coweta county, where, in Newnan, Mr. Cole died. Their son, Jesse, who had accompanied his parents from Virginia to Newton county, married Miss Elizabeth Crawford, a daughter of William T. and Elizabeth (Shanklin) Crawford, natives of South Carolina, who were among the early settlers of Henry county, Ga. One son, Taylor Crawford, served in the Mexican war under Gen. Taylor. R.S. Cole, the son of Jesse and Elizabeth Cole, was born in 1820, in Newton county, and reared on the farm in Henry county, coming to Meriwether county in 1842. His educational opportunities had been very limited, and he began life for himself with but very little to start with; but by determined effort and persistent industry he has acquired wealth and influence. His large farm consists of 1,500 acres of land, in splendid condition. He has a beautiful home, and he and his family enjoy the respect of all who know them. His wife, who he married in 1841, was Miss Nancy Ward, born in Meriwether county in 1819. She is a daughter of Obadiah and Susan (Fambrel) Ward, the former a native and constant resident of Meriwether county. Mr. Cole belongs to the masonic fraternity, and he and Mrs. Cole are both faithful members of the Methodist Episcopal church. COLQUITT, Walter Terry. "(father of Alfred Holt Colquitt), a Representative and a Senator from Georgia; born in Halifax County, Va., December 27, 1799; moved with his parents to Mount Zion, Carroll County, Ga.; attended the common schools and Princeton College; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1820 and commenced practice in Sparta, Hancock County, Ga.; moved to Cowpens, Ga.; elected judge of the Chattahoochee circuit in 1826 and reelected in 1829; was licensed a Methodist preacher in 1827; member of the State senate in 1834 and 1837; elected as a State Rights Whig to the Twenty-sixth Congress and served from March 4, 1839, to July 21, 1840, when he resigned, having refused to support General Harrison for President; elected as a Van Buren Democrat to the Twenty-seventh Congress to fill in part vacancies caused by the resignations of Julius C. Alford, William C. Dawson, and Eugenius A. Nisbet, and served from January 3, 1842, to March 3, 1843; elected to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1843, until his resignation in February 1848; member of the Nashville convention in 1850; died in Macon, Ga., May 7, 1855; interment in Linnwood Cemetery, Columbus, Ga. Biographical Directory of the American Congress, 1774-1949 senator, was born in Halifax county, Va., Dec. 27, 1799; son of Henry and Nancy (Holt) Colquitt. He was educated at the schools of Hancock county, Ga., whither his family had removed in his infancy, and he attended the College of New Jersey for a time. In 1820 he was admitted to the bar at Milledgeville, Ga., and began to practise at Sparta, later removing to Columbus, Ga. Late in 1820 he was chosen brigadier-general of militia. He was licensed a Methodist preacher in 1827. He was circuit judge, 1826-32, presiding over the first court held in Columbus; and in 1834 he was elected to the Georgia senate, being returned in 1837. In 1838 he was elected a representative in the 26th congress as a State Rights Whig, resigned his seat in July, 1840, having transferred his allegiance to the Democratic party, and was elected to the 27th congress, serving from February, 1842, to March, 1843. He was elected a U.S. senator in 1842 and resigned in February, 1848, Herschel V. Johnson completing his term. He was a delegate to the Nashville convention of 1850. He was married first, Feb. 23, 1823, to Nancy H., daughter of the Hon. Joseph Lane; secondly in 1841, to Mrs. Alphea B. (Todd) Fauntleroy, and thirdly in 1842, to Harriet W., daughter of Luke Ross.
