Nicholson


Francis Nicholson was born 12 Nov 1655 and died 5 Mar 1727/1728. He was born in Dokwnholme, Yorkshire, England and early in life was a page for the Marquis of Winchester. In 1678 he fought in Flanders, rising to the rank of captain, becoming the assistant to Sir Edmund Andros, the governor of New England. The latter duty brought him across the seas to the American colonies. He served as a British military officer and colonial governor of New York, Virginia, Maryland, Nova Scotia and South Carolina. He served as governor of South Carolina from 1721 to 1725, afterwards returning to England. He died 5 Mar 1728 in London and was buried in the parish of St. George, Hanover Square.
