Edward Middleton emigrated from Barbadoes in 1678. He and his wife, Sarah, established their plantation from a land grant on Goose Creek called The Oaks which was located off Redbank Road on Middleton Drive in Berkeley County (St. James Goose Creek Parish).
Arthur Middleton, son of Edward Middleton, who was born 1681 in old Berkeley County, South Carolina and died 17 September 1737 in Charleston. Arthur was President of the Council. He was married to Sarah Amory who died in 1722. Issue:
- William Middleton, born 1710 in Charleston, died 1785.
- Hon. Henry Middleton was born 1718 in Charleston and died 13 June 1784 in Charleston. He was married to Mary Henrietta Bull, born 16 Feb 1722, died 1 March 1772, a daughter of Hon. William Bull of Charleston. Issue:
- Arthur Middleton, born 26 Jun 1742 in Charleston, died 1 Jan 1787 on Goose Creek, Berkeley County, South Carolina. He was educated in Great Britain at the Westminister School in London and St. Johns College in Cambridge. In 1764 Arthur and his bride Mary Izard settled at Middleton Place. Mary was a cousin of South Carolina Congressman Ralph Izard. In 1776 Arthur was elected to succeed his father in the Continental Congress, and was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. During the Revolution he served in defense of Charleston and after the city fell to the British in 1780, he was sent to St. Augustine, Florida as a prisoner of war. He was buried in the gardens of Middleton Place. The plantation passed to his eldest son, Henry Middleton, Governor of South Carolina.

- Henrietta Middleton, born 15 Nov 1750 in Charleston, died 22 April 1792 in Charleston.
- Sarah Middleton, born 5 Jul 1746 in Charleston, died 5 May 1784 in Charleston.
- Hester Middleton, born 1719 in Charleston.
- Thomas Middleton, Member of the Council, was born ca 1720 in Charleston, married Mary Henrietta Bull, born 16 Feb 1722, died 1 Mar 1722. Issue:
- Mary Middleton, called Polly, married Pierce Butler in Charleston on 10 January 1771. Pierce Butler (above) came to America as an officer in the British Army, but resigned his commission to marry Mary Middleton. Major Butler inherited his South Carolina plantations and slaves through his wife, Mary Middleton, daughter of Thomas Middleton. She willed her holdings to four of her granddaughters, viz: Sarah Middleton Guerard, wife of South Carolina Governor Benjamin Gerard; Mary Middleton Butler, wife of Major Pierce Butler; Mary Izard Breton, wife of Miles Brewton; and Elizabeth Izard Blake, wife of Daniel Blake.
