LIETNER/LIGHTNER of Newberry County, South Carolina
Christopher Lightner was born ca 1710, probably Austria, died after 1769 in South Carolina. He lived in Pennsylvania for a time, because he was listed on the 1758 Lancaster County Tax List, in the Leacock Township. He must have removed to South Carolina after that, because, on 17 August 1769, he witnessed the LWT of George Preeler, butcher, in Charles Town, South Carolina.

"Christopher Leitner, born about 1710, died about 1768, married before coming to the Dutch Fork in Newberry County, South Carolina as a petition for bounty grant of 250 acres on Crims Creek dated 2 October 1752 indicates he had a wife and three children. Another grant for 100 acres on Second Creek made 12 February 1755. 20 March 1762, his son Michael, signed a bounty grant which shows that his father died between 1762 and 1769. Shares of property were divided between his sons, John and Michael; and since there was another child who may have died before that date or others who were daughters already provided for, only the two dividend shares were given to the grant."

- George Michael Lightner, son of Christopher, was born ca 1735 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. His estate was administered on 12 September 1791 in the Abbeville District of South Carolina. Wife: Mrs. Marie Beard. He served in the Revolutionary War and made claims for lands in South Carolina for that service. He was Justice for Orangeburgh District, South Carolina. "Major Michael Leitner, born about 1735 and died about 1789-91, married Maria Beard, probably a sister of Colonel Jonas Beard, and had children: John Christian Lightner who died 1800 and leaving all his property to his sisters who were: Anne Marguerette who married George Adam Setzler, Sr.; Mary, who married Dr. Henry F. Schmitz; Eve Christian who married 1st, John Adam Epting, Jr., 2nd, Martin Koone, Sr.; Catherine who married John A. Setzler, Jr."
Major Michael Lightner was a Justice of the Peace before the Revolutionary War; Justice of the Quorum; and from 1775 to 1781 a member of the Second Provincial Congress from Upper Orangeburg District. During the war, he was a captain, then major of Calvary Troops.
"Mrs. Maria Beard Leitner was born probably Pennsylvania and married Major Michael Leitner, son of Christopher. Her husband, having organized one of the scouting companies in the Upper Dutch Fork and being an active fighter against the Tory element, was sought for continuously by the Tories and the English Troops. She was sister or close relative to Colonel Jonas Beard, another famous American officer in the Revolutionary War. "

- John Lightner was born ca 1755 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, died after 1800 in Fairfield County, South Carolina. He was listed on the 1790 Newberry District, South Carolina Census; also Fairfield, South Carolina:
John Lightner - 2 males 16-26, male 26-45, male 45 and over, 2 females under 10, 2 females 16-26, female 45 and over.
John died 1800/1810 in Fairfield County, South Carolina. Issue:
1. Michael Lightner b. ca 1780 in Newberry County, South Carolina, listed on the 1820 Emanuel County, Georgia Census. He was Captain of the Georgia Militia between 1820-1821 in Emanuel County[1] and a Lieutenant in the Pulaski County Militia during 1825-1828.. Issue:
- Eli Lightner was born 1814 in Jones County, Georgia, died 28 March 1891, buried in the Jamestown or Shiloh Cemetery on the Ft. Benning Reservation, Chattahoochee County. He married on 3 December 1835 in Jones County, Lucinda Tucker (born 15 March 1812 or 1815, died 5 August 1880, buried same cemetery. According to the births of his children, he was in Harris County between 1839-1841, and removed to Muscogee County about 1844 where he was listed on the 1850 Census. Issue:
- James Marion Lightner, born 3 December 1836 in Jones County, Georgia, died 14 December 1909, buried in the Jamestown or Shiloh Cemetery on the Ft. Benning Reservation. He married Catherine Augusta Adams (born 16 December 1850, died 14 January 1891, buried same cemetery), a daughter of Edwin Adams and his wife, Sarah (Fisher) Adams. - Camilla Lightner, born 1839 in Harris County.
- John N. Lightner, born 1841 in Harris County.
- Martha A. (Minnie) Lightner, born 1844 in Muscogee County, buried in the Shiloah Cemetery, Ft. Benning Reservation.
- John Lightner, listed on the 1820 Fairfield County, South Carolina Census.
- George Lightner was born ca 1750 Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, his LWT dated 28 October 1812, probated 22 January 1814 in Richland County, South Carolina. He married 1st, in Pennsylvania, Mary Creighton and 2nd, Barbary.
