James Hunt of Richland County

James Hunt was chr. 19 Aug 1761 in Dunfermline Assoc. Session, Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland, son of William Hunt and wife, Helen (Young) Hunt. He was married to Janet Lawson. It is unknown whether James Hunt came to America, however, there are (3) James Hunt's listed on the 1800 Lexington County Census. For the present time, I would assume that he did, simply because the obituary of his son, James, indicates that James (Jr.) had been a resident of Columbia, South Carolina (Richland County) for many years. Issue:

James Hunt was chr. on 2 June 1795 in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland, parents named in the Parochial Register of Perth. There were two references to his death, both published in The Southern Patriot, as follows:
8 Dec 1829. “Died in Columbia on the 27th ult. Mr. James Hunt, a native of Fifeshire, Scotland and for many years a resident of Columbia.”

5 Jan 1830. Died 27th ult. in Lexington District, James Hunt, a native of Scotland, for many years a resident of Columbia, south Carolina.”
James Hunt was married to Margaret Hughes in Columbia, South Carolina on 14 Nov 1824 and by her had two small sons. One of them was Thomas J. Hunt, born 1826, and another son (name unknown) was born within a year or so. The widow, Margaret Hughes was found on the 1830 Pickens County Census. Her close neighbors were Hulet Hunt (a Scottish name); Carter Dalton; Sarah Hunt; and Nicholas Hunt. These people all seem to be related to Charles and Esli Hunt from Virginia. None of them can be a brother to James Hunt, because none of them were born in Scotland and all of them were in Virginia or South Carolina from ca 1750 to 1800. I searched all of the Hunts in the South Carolina counties and did not find another one born in Scotland. However, it may be that Hulet Hunt, born 1800-1810 and Nicholas Hunt, born ca 1800 who resided nearby. Others in 1830 Pickens County may be brothers. There is a Sarah Hunt, widow, of an unknown age, also on that census. If she is the one who married Charles Hunt, a brother to James Hunt, which Charles Hunt is it? Charles Hunt, Jr. may have had a Charles Hunt born ca 1800 who died before 1830 and Sarah was the widow, but I have not found anything on this. Hunt of Pickens county

Now for the business of trying to find James Hunt before he died. He should have been listed on the 1820 census, but the only James found was in Abbeville and Spartanburg Counties (neither of these are this James). Apparently he was either in the Lexington district of Richland County, or in Lexington County.
