Hemphill of York County


Robert Hemphill came to America about 1695 from Loch Nee, scotland, a medical missioner who escaped Christian persecution. He stayed in America for three years before returning to Scotland where hee retrieved the faily bible which he had buried before hand. The bible had wooden covers with beaten brass corners, laced together with rawhide strips. It was published in 1648. When hee returned to America, he brought with him several freedom seekers.

William Hemphill, the son of Samuel and Sarah Hemphill, was born 24 September 1793 in Clover, York County South Carolina. He wasmarried to Mary McCarter, also a native of South Carolina. William and Mary removed to the western part of Chattooga County, George before 1840. Issue:
