Hay of Jamaica, New York, South Carolina


Colonel Ann Hawkes Hay was the son of Michael Hay and his wife, Esther Wilkins of Scotland. He was born 14 Aug 1745 in Kingston, Jamaica and died 18 April 1785 in Beaufort, South Carolina. Ann was married on 5 Oct 1763 to Martha Smith, born 18 June 1745 in New York City, died 20 Mar 1821 in Beaufort, South Carolina, a daughter of William Mary and his wife, Mary (Het) Smith. During the American Revolution he commanded a regiment of volunteers to defend the western shore of the Hudson River near Haverstraw. Issue:

  • Janet Scott Hay, born 3 Nov 1775 in Haverstraw, New York, married Miss Campbell.
  • Martha Hay, born 22 Nov 1777 in Haverstraw, New York, married William Main Hutson.
  • Lewis Scott Hay, born 2 May 1780 in Haverstraw, New York, married on 9/7/1808 in South Carolina Harriet Yonge Johnson (4/12/1792-7/2/1865).
  • William Hay, born 26 Mar 1782 in Haverstraw, New York.
  • Frederick Jay Hay, born 5 Aug 1785 in Haverstraw, New York, died 10 Aug 1849 in Boiling Springs, South Carolina, married on 10 Aug 1849 Susan Cynthia Brown, born 8 Aug 1792, died 27 Nov 1869 in Barnwell, South Carolina. Issue:
    1. Samuel Hutson Hay, born 18 Mar 1818, died 24 Feb 1886 in Boiling Springs, South Carolina, married Mary Susan Peck (born 1814 in South Carolina). Issue:
    1. Thomas P. Hay, born 1855 in South Carolina, minister, resident of Aiken, South Carolina in 1880. Parents resided with him.
    2. Mary S. Hay, born 1857 in South Carolina, resided with brother (above) in 1880.
    3. Ellen R. Hay, born 1864 in South Carolina.
    4. William S. Hay, born 1868 in South Carolina.
