Clements of Hanover, Bedford County, Virginia
and Lexington District, South Carolina


The lineage begins with John Clements, born ca 1655/1660 in Hanover County, Virginia, died 1748 in Hanover County. This lineage has mistakenly been linked back to the Gloucester County Clements, but DNA results disprove a connection. Therefore, we will begin with John Clements who married 1st, Elizabeth Terry? and 2nd, Isabell Simon. His LWT named three sons, viz: William, John and Stephen. These children were probably issue of the first wife.
  1. William Clements, son of John, was born 1680/1683 in Hanover County Virginia and died 28 Feb 1760 in Amelia County, Virginia, the date of his LWT. Wife, Ann.
  2. John Clements, son of John, resided in Petersburg, Virginia where he died before 1747.
  3. Stephen Clements, born 1692, resided in Goochland County where he died intestate in 1746. Wife, Hannah.
William Clements was the progenitor of the Pittsylvania County family. Issue as follows:
  1. Benjamin Clements, born 1703, died 18 April 1780 in Pittsylvania County, was buried at Clement Hill
  2. John Clements.
  3. Elizabeth Clements.
  4. Francis Clements.
  5. Barsheba Clements.
  6. Ann Clements.
  7. William Clements, born 1702, died 23 Nov 1766.
  8. Francis Clements (1706-1767)
Capt. Benjamin Clements (above) was married 1725 in King and Queen County, Virginia to Susannah Hill (1710-1788), a daughter of Isaac Hill and his wife, Margaret Jennings.

Issue of Captain Benjamin Clements and Susannah:
  1. Isaac Clement (1727/1733-7 Dec 1816), died Anderson County, South Carolina, buried in the Clement Cemetery.
  2. Stephen Clement (1732-1797/8).
  3. Benjamin Clement (1735-1782).
  4. David Clement (1737-1739).
  5. Adam Clement (1738-1811).
  6. Jeriah Clement, born 1741.
  7. James Clement (1745-1779).
  8. Rachel Clement (1747-bef 1780).
  9. Daniel Clement (1749-1751).
  10. Elizabeth Clement, born 1751 Pittsylvania County.
Stephen Clement (above) was born 1732 in Virginia, was raised at Clement Hill, but in 1772 removed to Darlington District, South Carolina then to Wilkes County, Georgia where he died 1797/1798. Wife, Sarah. Issue:
  1. Henry Clements, born ca 1758 Bedford County, Virginia.
  2. Isom Clements, born ca 1760 Bedford County, Virginia.
  3. Aaron Clements, born ca 1762 Bedford County, Virginia.
  4. Clement Clements, born 1764 Bedford County, Virginia, died 1851 in Marion County, Georgia.
  5. Gabriel Clements, born in Bedford County, Virginia, died 20 Oct 1825 in Crawford County, Georgia.
Clement Clements, son of Stephen, was born 1764 in Bedford County, Virginia and moved with his father at the age of seven years to Darlington District where he enlisted in the Revolutionary War. During the war he served under his brother, Capt. Gabriel Clements. In 1847 he removed to Marion County, Georgia where he died in 1851.

Captain Gabriel Clements, son of Stephen, was born in Bedford County, Virginia in 1764, was a soldier of the South Carolina, on the South Carolina Line, served under General Francis Marion during the Revolutionary War. He enlisted from Lexington District where he received a pension from the State of South Carolina in 1823. Later he removed to Crawford County, Georgia where he died 20 Oct 1825. He was married to Mary Watts on 19 Feb 1793 in Lexington District. The widow applied for his pension from Telfair County in 1853 and died there on 14 Nov 1869. Jacob A. Clemens was administrator of the widow's estate. Mary had a sister, Jane Seay, age 62 in 1853, a resident of Lexington District. Issue:
  1. William Clements, born 21 Feb 1795 in Lexington, South Carolina.
  2. James Clements
  3. Clement Clements, born 1813 in Georgia. Wife, Margaret. The family were residents of Montgomery County, Georgia in 1880.
Clement HillBenjamin Clements was the owner of Clement Hill which was constructed during the 1770's. As early as 1740 he began purchasing large tracts of land on the Staunton River at Hurt, Virginia, growing tobacco. Among his enterprises was a grist mill and gunpower mill.
