Chastain of Pickens County, South Carolina


John Chastain was born 1766 in Buckingham County, Virginia and died 1845 in Pickens County, South Carolina. He was married to Jemima Denton. John Chastain came with his father to Rhea County, Tennessee, then later settled in the old Pendleton District near Pumpkintown, South Carolina. John Chastain Jr. was blind in later years and was called "Blind John" Chastain. He died in Pumpkintown. John and his wife are buried next to his father and mother at the old Chastain Cemetery No. 1. All their children were born in Pendleton District. Issue:

  1. Marquis R. Chastain, born 27 Feb 1833 in Pickens County, South Carolina, died 27 Sept 1882 in Pickens County, buried in Chastain Family Cemetery.
  2. John Chastain, born 14 Mar 1838 in Pickens County, died 6 Mar 1883, buried in the Chastain Family Cemetery.
  3. Malinda M. Chastain, born 2 Sep 1841 in Pickens County, died 29 Dec 1924, buried in the Chastain Family Cemetery.
  4. Sarah M. Chastain, born 9 Mar 1844 in Pickens County, died 11 Sep 1888, buried in Chastain Family Cemetery. She was the wife of Capt. W. K. Stewart.


Pickens County, South Carolina Deeds:-

Deed Book C-1, pp. 456-7. This Indenture made 13 Nov 1837 between P. Alexander, Esquire, Sheriff of Pickens County and John Allen of the District aforesaid: Whereas, William Allen, deceased, was in his life time and at the time of his death lawfully seized of the estate of inheritance to him and his heirs of a certain tract of land containing two hundred and fifty acres on the waters of Oolenoy in the district of Pickens sold by my predecessor William D. Sloan, then Sheriff of Pickens District, and that the said William Allen died intestate or it is said and whereas upon the death of the said William Allen the said plantation above mentioned and to be hereinafter more described descended to Abner Russel, Abner Chastain, James Allen, John Allen, heirs of Ambrose Reid in right of his wife, heirs of Abraham Powell in right of his wife, William L. Robinson, Hugh Allen, Cornelius Keith, heirs of John Capell and Abigail Allen (widow) and John Allen.

And whereas, Abner Russell and James Allen did on or about the 31 Aug 1835 made application to the court in said district to yours, under the directions and provisions of an Act of the General Assembly of the State in case made and entitles an Act to give jurisdiction to the Judges of the Court of Ordinary throughout the State to order the sale or division of real estate not exceeding a certain value directed to Abner Russel, Abner Chastain, John Allen, heirs of Ambrose Reid in right of his wife, heirs of Abraham Powell in right of his wife, William L. Robinson, Hugh Allen, Cornelius Keith, heirs of John Capell and Abigail Allen (widow) legal heirs and representatives of the said William Allen deceased requiring them to appear before the Court of Ordinary on the first Monday of February 1836 to show cause if any why the real estate of William Allen deceased should not be divided or sold. Dated 4 Jan 1836. Note: The property was sold 13 Nov 1837.

pp. 365-366. State of South Carolina, Pendleton District. I David Hudson of the State of Tennessee, Ray County, in consideration of the sum of one hundred dollars paid by Abraham Chastain of the State of South Carolina, Pendleton District, a tract of land containing one hundred and forty acres surveyed and granted to Alexander Edens lying on Canick Creek waters of Oolenoy Creek near the Table Mountain. 4 Jan 1828. /s/ William L. Keith and John Chastain.

pp. 366-367. State of South Carolina, Pendleton District. I David Hudson of the State of Tennessee, Ray County, in consideration of one hundred dollars paid by Abraham Chastain of Pendleton District, South Carolina, a part of a tract of land containing one hundred and forty acres surveyed and granted to George Hudson lying on Carrick Creek waters of Oolenoy Creek near the Table Mountain adj. the conditional line to the old line made by George Hudson and John Neel. 4 Jan 1828. Witness: William Keith, John Chastain.
