Bull of Charleston
Stephen Bull, Esq. came to South Carolina as Lord Ashley's deputy in 1669 on the frigate
Carolina. Lord Ashley gave Bull lands on the Ashley River in St. Helena's Parish in 1671 where he developed his plantation
Ashley Hall. He died about 1706. Issue:
Captain Barnaby Bull who also came about the same time was a planter in St. Andrew's Parish and in 1690 and 1691 owned lands on both sides of the Ashley River. His LWT dated 2 Mar 1715 empowered his executors to sell part of the lands if necessary. Barnaby may have been a son of Stephen Bull (above).
- Honorable William Bull Sr., born as Ashley Hall in 1683 and married Mary, the daughter of Richard Quintyne. Mary died March of 1738. Bull inherited Ashley Hall and Sheldon. He served as President of the Council and Commander-in-Chief of South Carolina, was lieutenant-governor from 1738 to 1755. He had a brother, Capt. John Bull, who died in Prince William's Parish, aged 72 years in August of 1767. Capt John's wife, Mary Bull, died Nov 1771, aged 72 years. Hon. Bull and General Oglethorpe marked out the town of Savannah and Bull Street was named after him. Upon the death of Colonel Arthur Middleton, Hon. Bull became President of the Council (1737). In addition to inheriting large tracts of land from his father and the above plantations, he also owned a brick mansion in Charleston on the corner of Meeting and Ladson Streets which lott had been granted to his father in 1694. Hon. Bull died 21 March 1755 at Sheldon. Wife, Mary, died 1739.
“On Monday last departed this life the Lady of the Honorable William Bull Esq, President and Commander in Chief in and over this province; and was interred Thursday last in very handsome manner, the funeral being attended by the Council and Assembly, with several other officers and gentlemen of distinction. Saturday, March 24, 1739.”
Issue:
- Stephen Bull, born 17 March, 1701, died Feb. 1750, served as captain of the St. Augustine expedition and was a Member of the Commons House of Assembly 1737, 1738, 1743, 1746. He was married on 2 May 1747 to Martha, daughter of Benjamin Godin.
- William Bull, Jr. (1710-1791), son of the lieutenant-governor, was married to a daughter of Katherine and Othniel Beale. “Last Tuesday died, in the 72nd year of her age, Mrs. Katharine Beale, widow of the late honorable Othniel Beale, and mother to the lady of his honour the Lieutenant Governor. Monday, Dec. 6, 1773.”
- Elizabeth Bull, born 9 Mar 1712, married 26 Dec 1730 Hon. Thomas Drayton, Member of the Council.
- Charlotte Bull, born 15 Aug 1719, died 30 Dec 1743, married Hon. John Drayton, Member of the Council.
- Mary Henrietta Bull, born 16 Feb 1722, died 1 March 1772, married Hon. Henry Middleton, Member of the Council.
- John Bull, born 1685, died 8/1767. Wife, Mary (1699-1771).

- Catherine Bull, born 1699, died Sept 1734 married Mr. Wilson.
