Boyles of Barnwell County, South Carolina & Screven and Ware Counties, Georgia

There were two Boyles families who settled Barnwell County, South Carolina, Henry and Charles Boyles. They probably descend from Charles Boiles found in the minutes of court of Winton County, South Carolina as a juror and petit juror in 1788 and 1790. Charles Boyles was born 1790/1791 in South Carolina, farmer, married Phoebe (born 1796 in South Carolina). Issue:[1]

• Mary Boyles, born 1817 South Carolina.
• Elizabeth (Betsy) Boyles, born 1819 South Carolina.
• Finetta (Eiremetta) Boyles, born 1822 South Carolina.
• Matilda Boyles, born 1826 South Carolina.
• Charles Scott Boyles, born 1828 South Carolina.
• Jefferson Boyles (Boils), born 1832 South Carolina, laborer. Listed on the 1860 Barnwell County Census with wife, Mary (born 1830), Great Cypress district. He was apparently deceased before 1870, because Mary was listed on the 1870 Census with two children.[2] In 1880, Mary Boyles and one son, Charles (age 16), laborer, were residing with the Stephen J. Rooks family in Great Cypress as a housekeeper. Issue:[3]
  

  1. David Boyles, born 1860 in Barnwell County, South Carolina., not found on the 1880 Census.
  2. John Boyles, born 1862 in Barnwell County, South Carolina, laborer. In 1880 he resided with the James A. Bennett family of Great Cypress, age 20, laborer.[4]
  3. Charles Thomas Boyles[5], born 1864 in Barnwell County, South Carolina, laborer. About 1889, C. T. Boyles was a member of the Rocky Ford Baptist Church in Screven County. Theresa Jeffers also mentioned.[6] The Jeffers families resided in Screven and Emanuel Counties. He married Mary Jane Jeffers, born August 1867 in Georgia, a daughter of William and Winnyford Jeffers. [7]Their first son was born in Rocky Ford in 1889. Apparently, they removed to Waycross, Ware County after that, I did not find any further activity of any Boyles family in Screven (or Emanuel) County after that. He died before 1900 because his widow, Mary J. Boyles was listed as head of household on the 1900 Ware County Census with children, John Isaac, Bulah, Eli and Ruby S. Mary Jane Boyles was buried in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Waycross along with her second husband, James F. Hendricks and another son, Leroy Hendricks. Issue:[8]

  1. John Isaac Boyles, born 10 June 1889, died 19 April 1984 in Bacon County. His application for social security (#263-24-0292) stated that he was born in Rocky Ford, Bulloch County (note: now in Screven Co.) and listed his father as Charles Thomas Boyles and his mother as Mary Jane Jeffers.
  2. Bulah Boyles, born April 1891 in Waycross, Ware County.
  3. Eli Boyles, born March 1895 in Waycross, Ware County.
  4. Ruby S. Boyles, born February 1898 in Waycross, Ware County.

• Cynthia Boyles, born 1833 South Carolina. Her estate was probated in 1868 by Henry Wilson.[9]

Henry Boyles Family

Henry Boyles was born 1803 in South Carolina and married Priscilla Steele (born 1812/1814 in South Carolina), a daughter of John Steele. Priscilla Boyles was mentioned in the John Steele estate in 1835. Issue:[10]

• William Boyles, born 1834 in South Carolina.
• Sarah Boyles, born 1837 in South Carolina.
• Washington Boyles, born 1843 in South Carolina.
• Henry Boyles, born 1844 in Barnwell County, South Carolina.
• James Calisa Boyles, born 1846/1848 in Barnwell County, South Carolina.
• Shadford Boyles, born 1848 in Barnwell County, South Carolina.
• James F. Boyles, born 1852 in Barnwell County, South Carolina.

[2] I do not have access to the S. C. Civil War Records. My guess is that Jefferson Boyles died during the war, after 1864, the birth of his last son.

[4] Wiregrass of Georgia lists a John Boyles who married Tobitha Bagley (born 5 October 1871) of Ware County. Also, a Mollie Boyles who married David D. Bagley (born 12 May 1869) of Ware County.
[5] The problem is to discover whether or not this Charles Boyles was Charles T. Boyles who died in (probably) Ware County, Georgia. I searched all of the State of South Carolina census records and did not locate another family of Boyles who had a child named Charles. All of the circumstances point to this Charles Boyles as being Charles Thomas Boyles. This Charles Boyles was not found in South Carolina after 1880. Therefore, using the process of elimination and all of the facts which imply that they are the same person, I am declaring them to be the same person.
