John Stewart (1733-1807) traveled the old Great Wagon Road, which was the route the Scotch-Irish took, into Surry County and settled in the northern portion near the State line adjacent to Pittsylvania County, Virginia. John Stewart was born about 1733 in Ireland and was married to Rachel, born ca 1736. John Stewart was about aged 42 when the American Revolutionary War commenced. The Stewarts had always been tenant farmers before the war, but afterwards owned land. In 1782 the family settled on Stewart's Creek in Surry County, which is near the Imogene Church today and Naked Creek. John Stewart died at Naked Creek in March of 1807, aged about 74 years of age. Abraham Hawks was the administrator of his estate. Rachel died at Naked Creek in 1812, aged about 76 years. Issue:
- Nathaniel Stewart, born ca 1754/1759 married Mary.
- Edward Stewart, born July 1767 married Mary Ford, daughter of William Ford. The family left Surry County, North Carolina to move into Spartanburg County, South Carolina and settle on the Tyger River. They moved again, this time to settle on Beaverdam Creek in Greenville County, South Carolina. By 1816 Edward Sr. was partially disabled and had fallen into serious debt to one George Miller. Included in the lawsuits was his on, Edward, Jr. As a result they lost their land on Beaverdam Creek in 1822 the sheriff selling the 200 acre farm to Nathaniel Miller, who then sold it to William Stewart, old Edward's son. At Edward's death, his widow, Mary, went to live with her eldest son, William. Issue:
- Elizabeth Stewart, born 1788 married Elijah Dill.
- Mahala Stewart, unmarried.
- William Stewart (1792-1878) married Nancy Ponder.
- Edward Stewart Jr., born 1797, served during War of 1812 with Andrew Jackson; also in the Seminole Indian War of 1817-1818. He was married to Lucretia Anders. He died on Beaverdam Creek in Greenville County about 1840 and was buried in the Stewart cemetery which is now located on the John Linder place. This plot originally belong to the Stewarts and is located near Liberty Church. He was listed on the 1850 Buncombe County, N. C. Census (said he was born 1797 in S. C.)
- Burrell Stewart (1807-1879) married Elizabeth Gosnell.
- Nancy Stewart, born ca 1767 married Abraham Hawks.
- Susanna Stewart, born ca 1773 married David May.
- Joseph Stewart, born 1778 married Margaret Dean.
