Shook Genealogy


The Shook family located in Northampton County, Pennsylvania before going into North Carolina. The father was George Shook, who had at least two sons as follows:

Jacob Shook, born 17 April 1749 in Northampton County, died 1 Sept 1839, buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Clyde, N. C. Jacob served as a Revolutionary War soldier, enlisting in 1776 at the time from his home in eastern Burke County, North Carolina; served under William Beekman and Colonel Christopher Beekman's Rowan regiment. He was on the Cross Creek expedition of 1776; in summer and fall of that year he served in the Cherokee expedition of General Griffith Rutherford; discharged October 1776. He was drafted in May 1781 to serve three months on the frontier of Catawba under Capt. Daniel Smith at Davidson's Fort. After the war he removed to Haywood County, N. C. Jacob Shook received land grants for his service on the east side of the Pigeon River in 1814 and 1819, 245 acres total. Jacob was married in the year of 1786 in Guilford County, North Carolina to Elizabeth Isabella Wietzell and by her had at least four children, viz: John Shook; David Shook; Abraham Shook; Daniel Shook; Jacob Shook; Peggy Shook married Mr. Hicks; Betsy Shook married John Hyde; Peter Shook, 29 Oct 1790-25 Dec 1855 married Mahala Evans; Margaret Shook; Susannah Shook married Ephrus Goodwin; and Mary Shook married John Haynes of Hines and Catherine Shook married Mr. Cooper.

Andrew Shook was born 1755 in Northampton County and resided in that portion of Burke County, North Carolina which later became part of Lincoln County and finally Catawba County. He was a Revolutionary War soldier who volunteered in March of 1776 as a militiaman, serving in the Rowan Regiment under Captain William Beekman's Company and Colonel Christopher Beekman. He participated in the expedition to Cross Creek against Scottish tories and after about two months discharged. He was drafted again in August of 1776 and served on the Cherokee expedition under General Griffith Rutherford; discharged in October 1776. During the spring of 1781 he was drafted for three months in Capt. Daniel Smith's regiment, serving on the Catawba frontier at Davidson's Fort. Later in 1782 he served as a mounted rifleman under Capt. Samuiel Killian and Colonel Joseph McDowell; marched against the Cherokee Indians. After the war he removed from Burke County, North Carolina to Haywood County.
