Sherrill Genealogy

Samuel Sherrill was born ca 1648 in Maryland, died Jul 1676 Maryland. He obtained a land grant in Charles County on 8 Oct 1663 for 150 acres of land. (Maryland Hall of Records, Vol. 6, p. 295). In 1674 Charles Co. Maryland Land Record No. 1, p. 155, Samuel Sherrill was delivered a tract of land call Ashbrooke. Then, on 16 May 1675, Charles Co. Deed (Liber 1, Folio 108-9), Thomas Stone sold to Samuel Sherrill, planter, land on the Avon River on the fork o f a creek called Thomas of Amos Fork, with a mill and land belonging to it, for 2000 pds. cash.

The Estate of Samuel Sherrill is dated 1677, Maryland Hall of Records, file 780214, Vol 4C, p. 26: Thomas King, administrator of Samuel Sherrill, deceased, intestate, 1677. An appraisement of the estate dated 1677 includes the accounts of Philip Lines, Capt. John Wheller, Samuell Easton, and John Boyd. Paid out to Richard Cowder (for coffin), John Blackfarr (planck for coffin), Phillip Lines, Thomas Stones, Robert Doyne, Major Ben Rozer, Thomas Hatfield, and Henry Hawskins (for trouble at house in time of sickness). /s/Thomas King, administrator 7 August 1677.

Maryland Hall of Records, Liber No. 8, Folio 352 (1676-1687):

“By virtue of a commission from ye house dated 2 June in the year of the Dominion of Charles, Maryland, 1676, to one Benjamin Roser directed these are humbly to certify that on the 24th of July 1676, I call before me, Thomas King of Charles, Maryland, administrator of all singular, the goods and cattells of Samuel Sherrill, late of said county, deceased, and administered unto him the oath of administration and took his bond with one John Hamilton bound with him for 30,000 pds. of tobacco. The bond is herewith testified and likewise delivered unto Thomas King his letter of administration as my commission required. /s/Benjamin Roser.”

Issue of Samuel Sherrill:

I. William Sherrill was born in 1670, died 1747 in Tennessee. He was found in Cecil Co., Maryland in 1702 when he purchased 150 acres of land called "Price's Forest", located on the east side of the Elk River, from William Price, Sr. 8 Mar 1702, Cecil County Maryland Land Records 1, ff255-6.

Lancaster Historical Society, Vol. 19, p. 278: 1718. “Over the east of Peques Creek, the English and Scotch-Irish, beginning about the neighborhood of Martinville and going down the creek, were: William and Robert Middleton, Albert Hendrick, William Sherrill, David Jones, Samuel Jones, John Robinson, John McCreary, practically all on the east side of Peques Creek.”

William must have removed to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1718 when he appeared on the Tax Rolls; again in 1721, Conestoga Township; 1722 in West Conestoga, Donegal Township; 1725 to 1729,West Conestoga Township, Lancaster County. He is referred to as "the Conestoga fur trader". It appears that he took the traditional emigration path, the road from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, into the Shenandoah Valley.

William Sherrill m. Margaret Rudisil in 1699 Cecil Co., Maryland. Issue:
A. Mary Sherrill was born 1693 Cecil Co., Maryland married Richard Perkins, son of Richard and Mary Perkins, born 9 Jul 1689 in Mosquito Creek, St. George Parish, Harford Co., Maryland. Richard Perkins settled near Lapidum on the Susquehanna River ca 1732, inheriting a tract of land from his father called Eightrump as well as 175 acres of 423 acres, being in the northern part. Issue:
1. Richard Perkins.
2. Benjamin Perkins born 6 Jan 1733 Baltimore Co., Maryland.
3. Mary Perkins born 1 Dec 1739 St. George Parish, Harford Co., Maryland.
4. Aventen Perkins born 3 Mar 1742 St. George Parish, Harford Co., Maryland.
B. Adam Sherrill was born 1697 in Cecil Co., Maryland, died 5 March 1772 Rowan County, North Carolina on the Yadkin River. He was buried on 4 May 1774 in Yadkin River Sec., Rowan Co. Adam Sherrill established Sherrill's Ford on the banks of the Catawba River. His home was located nearby. He apparently migrated from Pennsylvania to Maryland, Virginia, then to North Carolina and the wilderness of the Catawba River. Wife, Elizabeth.

On 1 Sept 1736 Adam Sherrill of Cecil Co., Maryland, yeoman, sold to Samuel Caldwell, late of Lancaster Co., Pa., yeoman, land known as Three Partners (Liber C, Folio 321-322 Maryland Hall of Records)...and whereas the said Thomas Jacobs did give, grant, convey and confirm until William Sherwill, father of the said Adam Sherwill, 200 acres of land, part of Three Partners, by deed of judgment 13 Dec 1725 entered in Maryland Hall of Records of Cecil in Liber SK, No. 5, Folio 9-10...Now know ye that he, the said Adam Sherwill and Elizabeth, his wife, for 50 pds. of Pennsylvania money....acknowledge and confirm unto the said Samuel Caldwell the 100 acres of land. (Cecil Co. Deeds, Vol 5, Folio 228).

A Land Warrant was found for him in Charles County, Maryland, of Prince George County, Maryland dated 20 October 1740, ... hath due unto him 100 acres of land within our said Province by virtue of a warrant...granted him 11 Jan 1738... (Liber EI, No. 6, Folio 302-303, Annapolis, Maryland). His name was found listed in an inventory of the effects found on a strange man who drowned in the Potomack River and taken upon 8 Aug 1738, Orange County, Virginia (Deed Book I, p. 64-65).

He must have removed to Augusta County, Virginia, as a deed dated 26 Sept 1748 exists between Adam Sherrill of Augusta County, Colony of Virginia, farmer, to Amos Thatcher of Prince George County, for 100 pounds money of Pennsylvania.

Adam Sherrill m. Elizabeth in 1722 Cecil Co., Maryland. His LWT dated 5 May 1772, probated 4 May 1774, Rowan Co., N. C. Probate Records, names his sons: Adam, Quillar and William.

a. William Sherrill, Capt., born 1 May 1723 in Cecil County, Maryland.

b. Samuel Sherrill, born 1 Oct 1725 in Cecil County, Maryland, died 22 June 1800 in Washington County, Tennessee.

c. Uriah Sherrill, born 1 Mar 1728 in Cecil County, Maryland, died 27 Nov 1779 in Catawba County, North Carolina. He was married on 25 Dec 1753 in Iredell County, North Carolina to Judith Lewis, born 10 Feb 1725, died 27 Sept 1815 in Anderson County, South Carolina. Issue:
  1. David Sherrill, born 2 Oct 1765, died 27 Jul 1827, resident of Burke County, North Carolina.
  2. Benjamin Sherrill, born 5 Feb 1769, died 9 Jul 1852, resident of Burke County, North Carolina.
  3. Ruanna Sherrill, born 11 Feb 1775 in Burke County, North Carolina.
  4. Lewis Sherrill, born 14 April 1761 in Burke County, North Carolina, died 16 Dec 1840 in Anderson, South Carolina. He was married to Mary Mason on 27 Feb 1783 in Burke County, North Carolina. Lewis served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War, enlisting from Burke County. He served from the age of 18 years under Capt. Daniel Smith and Lt. Coloonel Hugh Brevard and Major Joseph McDowell; stationed on the Catawba frontier, guarding against the Cherokee Indians. Served about two years in all. After the war he removed to Laurens District, South Carolina where he resided for two or three years before moving to Anderson District. According to his pension, a daughter-in-law, Mahala Sherrill, was residing in Cass County, Georgia in 1853. Issue as follows:

f. Isaac Sherrill was born 20 June 1736. His LWT dated 15 Jan 1777, probated 12 Nov 1777 (See New Jersey Historical Society Coll., Vol. 9, p. 112-113; Cyclopedia of New Jersey Biography, 1823,Vol. I, p. 81-2, New Jersey Will Book 19, p. 406).

h. Moses Sherrill died 1813, the date of his Last Will and Testament. Named Sarah, Thomas, Jr., William, Michael and Absalom Sherrill.
i. Catherine Sherrill, born 1744.
C. Margaret Sherrill was born 1701 in Cecil Co., Maryland, died after 1745 in Orange Co., Virginia. She m. Elisha Perkins, son of Richard Perkins and Mary) on 1 Dec 1718 in St. George Parish, Harford Co., Maryland. Margaret Sherrill, daughter of William Sherrill, had various legal proceedings in Orange Co., Virginia Book 1, p. 243,300,316,329 and in Order Book 3, p. 292, 477, and Order Book 4, p. 104,232,253. The Grand Jury found that Choomes lived in adultry with the wife of Elisha Perkins in St. Marks Parish; that Elisha Perkins was brought into court and accused of barbarously using his wife, Margery, who had sworn peace against him, wherein Margaret Perkins asked for separate alimony against her husband (dismissed). Another case: Margaret Perkins, alias Sherrill, a bastard child in St. Mark's Parish (case dismissed). Also, other complaints ensued stating that Margaret Perkins disturbed the peace on 26 Jan 1745, for which the Grand Jury sentenced her to jail for one year. However, on 28 Mar 1745 she was set free by the Sheriff. The LWT of Christopher Hoomes dated 28 May 1780, probated 21 Feb 1785 in Culpepper Co., Va. gave to William Sherrill, son of Margaret Sherrill, alias Margery Perkins, the tract of land whereon Christopher Choomes lived. Issue:

iii. Ute Perkins. The Augusta County, Va records reflect that Ute Perkins, alias Anderson, was the leader of the “Perkins Gang”. He was arrested in 1747. Deed, Frederick Co., Va Order Book 1, p. 497...(undated)“Adam Sherrill, being brought before the Court as a harbourer of Ute Perkins, a horse thief, and it appearing to the Court that the said Sherrill is guilty of the same, it is ordered that the Sheriff take the said Sherrill into his custody until he enters into recognizance in the sum of One Hundred Pounds Sterling with good securities in the sum of fifty pounds sterling each, in case the said Sherrill shall not be of good behaviour, for a twelve month and a day....”

D. William Sherrill was born 1702 in Cecil Co., Maryland. There is a deed between William Sherrill, Jr., late of Cecil Co., Maryland, planter, 22 Aug 1744, and John McCrerry of the same place, yeoman that the said William Sherwill and Margaret, his wife, sell land 100 acres called The Three Partners, being part of a tract which Thomas Jacobs sold to William Sherwill, Sr. and the said William Sherwill, Sr. sold to WIlliam Sherwill, Jr.
Adam Sherrill obtained a land grant on April 1749 in Anson County (formerly Bladen), North Carolina. This territory later became known as Lincoln County, North Carolina. Adam's land and the surrounding area ultimately became known as Sherrill's Ford.
Some say that the old house in which Adam Sherrill resided still stands at Sherrill's Ford.

Sherrill's Monument
Adam Sherrill's descendants erected a monument to his pioneering in this area, and the town of Sherrill's Ford today commemorates this historical family. Photo from Newton-Conover Observer dated 16 June 1952, Vol. 19, #20.
