Salter of the Cape Fear River
About the year of 1200 A. D. the Salter family seat was located at Bokenhamis in England. During the reign of Richard III (1482)
Walter Salter owned the estate at Bokenamis. Members of the family were lords and knights. Ultimately three branches of the family came to America. In 1600 the Virginia Company was formed for the
purpose of planting a colony in America. Sir Nicholas Salter contributed funds and helped to establish the first
permanent English settlement in Jameston in 1607. Descendants of this family settled in North Carolina, one branch
locating in Beaufort and Hyde Counties and another branch in Bladen County on the Cape Fear River.
William Salter of Bladen County was born in 1700; married Mary Locke in Bladen County and by her had a number of children.
Richard Salter, son of William and Mary Salter, was born 1737 and married Ann. They had issue: Richard, James, John,
William (married Elizabeth Kemp), Mary and Ann.
William Salter who married Elizabeth Kemp and had issue, viz:
- James Salter, born 1789, married Mary Locke and had issue:
- Richard Lloyd Salter, born 1811 in Bladen County, North Carolina, removed to Stewart County, Georgia in 1836.
- Thomas Locke Salter, born 1815 in Bladen County, removed to Stewart County, Georgia. He was married on 26 Jan 1843 to Mary Jane
Durham, daughter of Seth and Mary Durham of Stewart county. He died 17 June 1873, buried at Florence, Georgia.

Pamlico River called Mount Colvert. His daughter, Sarah, was left in the care of Mrs. Sarah Porter of Cape Fear. Son, Edward.
Daughters: Sarah, Mary, Susannah. Sons-in-law: Miles Harvey and John Harvey.
