Rust Genealogy


Peter Rust was born 1754 in Bedford County, Virginia, now Campbell County and died 4 Mar 1829 in Burke County, North Carolina. He was the son of Jeremiah and Mary Rust who established their home at Rustbury in Campbell County. Peter enlisted in the Revolutionary War in Bedford County in a militia company commanded by Capt. Samuel Houston (or Huston); served under Colonel James Callaway in an expedition against the Cherokee Indians in 1780; discharged in October of 1780 and removed to Burke County. In Burke County, he enlisted in a militia company commanded by Captain James McFarland of McDowell's Regiment, stationed on the Catawba frontier. Peter was married on 15 Mar 1781 in Burke County to Elizabeth Ballew (1760-1859), a daughter of Joseph Ballew and a sister of Mrs. John Rutherford, Sr. Elizabeth was aged 94 years in 1855. Peter Rust died on 4 Mar 1829 in Burke County, and his widow was awarded a warrant of 160 acres of bounty land by the Act of 1855. They are buried in the Rust cemetery near Bridgewater in Burke County. Peter received a land grant on the North side of the Catawba River adjacent to land belonging to John Rutherford, formerly owned by William Moore, granted 1798. In 1823 he was granted 110 acres of l and on Reedy Branch, adjacent to land belonging to John Rutherford, John Greenlee, James Hogan and Robert Shearman. In all, he received land grants in 1797, 1798, 1821 and 1823.
