James Poteat (1809-1889) was a planter in Caswell County, North Carolina. He was married first to Isabella Roberts and second in 1855 to Julia Annise McNeill (1833-1910). In 1880, he was a hotel proprietor in Yanceyville, North Caroliona. Issue by the first marriage:
- Lindsay Poteat, died 1864.
- John Miles Poteat, died 1867.
- Elizabeth Bettie Poteat, died 1873, married George R. Lindsay.
- James Preston Poteat, died 1907, married Emma Moore.
Issue by second marriage:
- William Louis Poteat.
- Ida Isabella Poteat, born 1858.
- Edwin McNeill Poteat, born 1860, married Haley Gordon, married second, Harriet Brittingham.
- Emma Lindsay Poteat (1862-1882).
William Louis Poteat (above) was born 20 October 1856 in Caswell County, North Carolina and was married on 24 June 1881 to Emma James Purefoy, born 13 October 1859 in Wake FOrest, North Carolina, a daughter of Addison F. Purefoy. William received a B. A. from Wake Forest College in 1877, M. A. 1889, post graduate studies in Marine Biology. He spent a short while in the Zool. Inst., University of Berlin. He became a teacher in Wake Forest College in 1878, and was president from 1905 to 1927.

- Hubert McNeill Poteat, born 12 Dec 1886, married 26 June 1912 Essie, daughter of J. L. Morgan of Marion, North Carolina.
- Louie Poteat, born 12 Feb 1889, married 28 Aug 1912, Wheeler Martin, Jr.
- Helen Purefoy Poteat, born 6 April 1896, married 6 Marc 1919, Laurence T. Stallings, Jr.
