The Polk family originated in Donegal, Ireland with William B. Polk who was born in that country in 1662. He emigrated to America and settled in Whitehall, Somerset County, Maryland where he died in 1740. He was married to Ann Owens. Issue:
- Elizabeth Polk, born 1695 in Whitehall, Harford County, Maryland.
- William Polk, born 1700/1710 in Whitehall, died 1750/1760 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He was married to Margaret Taylor who died 10 Jan 1763 in Mecklinburg County, North Carolina. Issue:
- William Polk (ca 1725-1802).
- Charles Polk, born 29 Jul 1732 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, died 10 Mar 1821 Clear Lake, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Charles was married on 5 Feb 1782 to Phebe Helms, born 10 June 1764, died 12 Jan 1849, a daughter of George Helms and his wife, Mary Margaret (Falkenborough) Helms. Charles Polk removed from Pennsylvania to Mecklenburg County, North Carolina about 1750. He served as a Lieutenant in 1766 in Capt. Adam Alexander's Company of Militia, The Clear Creek Company, and during the Revolutionary War as a captain.
