Penland of Haywood County


Robert Penland, born ca 1744, settled in Burke County, North Carolina where he had two known sons, viz: George Penland (1778-1877) and Robert Penland (1779-1856).

Robert Penland, son of Elder Robert Penland of Burke County, North Carolina and wife Elizabeth (Brank) Penland, was born 15 Aug 1779 in Burke County, died 1856. He was married to Mary B. Moore and removed from Burke County late 1700s to settle in Fines Creek Township, Haywood County. Issue:
  • William Penland married his cousin, Polly Penland, lived on Turkey Creek.
  • Robert Henry Penland married Sarah Caroline Sitton, lived in Canton. Issue:
  1. M. Elizabeth Penland married W. Burton Smathers.
  2. Sophia Malissa Penland married Joseph M. L. McCracken.
  3. Maggie A. Penland married Dr. J. M. Mease of Canton.
  4. Robert Reed Penland married C. Lavonia McCracken.
  5. Sarah Jane, never married.
  6. Louisa Frances Penland, died infancy.
  7. William Tyndarius Penland, died infancy.
  • James Penland settled at Waynesboro.
  • George Penland married Emily Shook, resided at Clyde.
  • Charles Penland, died young.
  • Betsy Penland married James Russell, lived on Fines Creek
  • Caroline Penland married James Russell, the husband of the deceased, Betsy.
  • Peggy Penland married John Rogers and removed to Cherokee County.
  • Avaline Penland married (1) Marjoram Henry of Jonathan Creek (2) Joseph Fincher.
  • Polly Ann married Irvin Rice who was killed by Federal renegades during the Civil War.
