Outlaw of Bertie County
The progenitor of the family from Norfolk, England was Edward Outlaw who died 1714 in Portsmouth, Norfolk County, Virginia. He was married to Elizabeth Davenall (1680-1727) and by her had four known children, viz: Elizabeth, Edward, Sarah and Ralph.
Edward Outlaw was born 1685 in Norfolk Virginia and died 1738/1739 in Bertie County, North Carolina, being the first of the family to settle there. He was married in 1706 in Norfolk, Virginia to Anne Ivey, born 1685 in Norfolk, a daughter of George and Hannah Ivey. Issue:
- Mary Outlaw, born 1708 in Norfolk, Virginia, died before 1740.
- Sarah Outlaw, born 1710 in Norfolk, Virginia.
- George Outlaw was born in 1712 in Norfolk County, Virginia. He was married to Agnes and had two known sons, viz: George and Morgan. George died 1795 in Bertie County, leaving his Last Will and Testament. His wife, Agnes, died the same year naming only her son, George Outlaw.
George Outlaw was born and died in Bertie County. He was a member of the House of Commons in 1796 and in 1799; a member of the Senate from 1806 to 1822; Speaker in 1812, 1813, 1814; elected a member of the 18th Congress 1823-1825; and was the first moderator of the Chowan Baptist Association established in 1806.
