Meece/Mease of Haywood County


Mathias Meece is believed to have been born in either Scotland or Ireland and to have been brought over on the ship with Fannie Yount, whom he later married. They settled in Henson Cove and raised nine children.

  • Mary Meece married Nathan Henson.
  • Sallie Meece married Gilbert Henson.
  • Allie Meece married Young Bennett.
  • Peter Meece (1809-1892) married Nancy Robinson.
  • Myra Meece; no heirs.
  • Washington Meece, moved West.
  • Houston Meece, died young.
Peter Meece (above) was born 11 Feb 1809 in North Carolina and died 1892 in Haywood County. He was married to Nancy Robinson, born 12 Jan 1810, died 10 Sep 1882 in Haywood County. They were residents of Pigeon in Haywood County in 1880 according to the census. They had issue:

  • Robinson or Robert Meece (1832-1864), killed during Civil War.
  • Douglas Meece, killed during Civil War.
  • Morgan Meece (1836-1910) married Emma Benson. Issue: Robert, Nannie, Cora, Elsie, Albert, J. Medford, Crawford, Zeb and Flora.
  • Lorenzo Meece (1837-1936) married Malissie Williams; residing at Henson Cove, age of 93 in 1935. Issue: John, Ira, Kizzie, Debora, Nelson and Bradford.
  • J. Medford Meece (1840-1896), studied medicine in Philadelphia; joined C. S. A. Medical Corps during the war.
  • Bradford Meece (1842-1914) married Lou Smathers; removed to Clay County.
  • Washington Meece (1848-1932) married Annie Evans; one child, Effie.
  • Manson Meece was born 23 Mar 1849 in North Carolina, died 3 Jun 1932. He married Adeline Smathers. Issue: Albert, Clara, Fred, Charlie, Way and Nannie.
  • J. Nelson Meece (1853-1933) married Nannie Reno.
  • Cynthia Meece married Mr. Henson.
