Hugh McCrary was first discovered in Rowan County in 1760 when he purchased land on Abbott's Creek from John Hamby on 2 Nov 1760.
"Hugh is said to have come from Ireland through Pennsylvania to Rowan County (now Davidson County). Hugh, Jr., in his petition for Revolutionary War Pension, stated that he was born in Ireland about 1758 (Pensions Claim #S46,254). So there is no doubt that this McCrary line goes back to Ireland." Centennial History of Davidson CountyBy J. C. Leonard, pp. 166-183.
Hugh McCrary's LWT was dated 14 Feb 1785 (Book C, page 18, Rowan County). He died 14 Feb 1785, aged 65 years and was buried in the Jersey Settlement graveyard. His wife, Susannah, died 20 Oct 1800, aged 73 years.
Boyd McCrary, son of Hugh, was married to Nancy Anna Merrill, daughter of Capt. Benjamin and Jemima Smith Merrill. "This is verified by Rowan County Court records of May 9, 1777, Nov. 5, 1777, and Feb. 6, 1778, in the Will of Andrew Smith of Hopewell, New Jersey (see Capt. Benjamin Merrill and the Merrill Family of North Carolina by W. E. Merrill, 1935, p. 13)." Boyd McCrary died in Missouri, his LWT in Howard County, Vol. 2, page 36, dated 18 Oct 1815 in Buncombe County.
Hugh McCrary, son of Boyd McCrary, purchased land in Buncombe County on 5 Oct 1804 (Book 7, page 287).
