Matthews of Henry County, Virginia and North Carolina


The Matthews family originated in Wales. In 1773, Tandy Matthews settler in Germantown in North Carolina. He was married to (1) Betsy Hill and (2) Pink Coffer. Issue:
  • Robert Matthews, born ca 1797, married Mary Fritz, had one child, William.
  • William Matthews married Mary Staples.
  • James Matthews, born ca 1799, married Eliza Allen, daughter of Robert Allen, resided at Lewiston, before removing to Mississippi. Issue:
    1. Robert Edward Matthews married Sarah Abingdon. Issue:
      1. James Matthews married Mollie Koger.
      2. Bettie Matthews, unmarried.
      3. John Matthews, unmarried.
      4. Celia Matthews married William Marshall.

    5. David Matthews.
    6. Caleb Matthews married Lucy Mullins of Henry County, Virginia. Issue:
        Calvin Matthews.
      1. John Hill Matthews resided in western Virginia. His father died when he was about seven years of age and he spent most of his time in the home of his grandfather, Henry G. Mullins. During the War Between the States he carried mail and helped transfer troops between Martinsville and Danville. In 1875 he was elected clerk of the county court. He married (1) Annie Morris (2) Sallie Craghead, annd once more. He died in 1912.

    10. Patsy Matthews married Colonel Bitting of North Carolina.

    12. Marcella Matthews, died 1855. He owned over 2000 acres of land and 150 slaves.
