James Lea was born 1743 in Richmond County, Virginia. He was married to Ann Tolbert Hearndon. James Lea and his wife, Anne, settled in Caswell County before the Revolutionary War. He died there on 2 June 1792, the date of Last Will and Testament, March 1792. Issue:

- William Lea. On 28 Feb 1786 William Lea of Caswell County deed to David Cochran of Caswell County for 153 pounds, 450 acres of land on Country Line and Rattlesnake Creek adjoining Jacob Williams, Thomas Donoho, Major Lea (his brother) and Sanders.
