King of Transylvania Counties


Samuel King, Revolutionary War Soldier, was born 1 Feb 1746, married in Bedford County, Virginia to Elizabeth Underwood Davenport, a daughter of Joseph Underwood and widow of Mathew Davenport. She was the mother of two sons, viz: Glover and John Davenport. Samuel King enlisted in the Revolutionary War as a solder in Company K, 11th Virginia Regiment of Continental Troops on 9 Dec 1776; served at Camp Valley Forge in Pennsylvania. After the war, about 1779, he moved his family to Rutherford County and settled on the 200 acres of land he purchased from John Kuykendall on the south fork of the Broad River. Samuel King was buried in the old King Cemetery on Finley Cove Road in Hendersonville (a DAR marker was placed at the Mud Creek Baptist Church cemetery in Hendersonville). Samuel King died 1828 and was buried in the Mud Creek Cemetery near Flat Rock in Henderson, North Carolina. Issue:
  1. Joseph King, born 1770 in Bedford County, Virginia, died 28 May 1849, married 18 Oct 1793 Leodicia Parks Morgan; settled at King's Bridge, French Broad River in Henderson County and was buried in the old French Broad River Cemetery on Rugby Road, in Henderson County, North Carolina. Issue: Hiram, Leah, Mary, Samuel, Rebecca, John, Leodicia, Joseph and Benjamin.
  2. Samuel King Jr., born 1772 in Bedford County, Virginia, married (1) Mary Ashe Kelly (2) Rebecca Clark), resided along the Upper French Broad Valley region of Transylvania County. He died 2 Feb 1849, buried in the Glazener Cemetery in Brevard, North Carolina. He had two sons: Jonathan, born 1800; Jeremiah, born 1802; and seven daughters.
  3. Jonathan King, born 14 Dec 1774 in Bedford County, Virginia, died 5 Dec 1859 in Green River, Rutherford County, North Carolina, buried in Mill Spring Cemetery, Polk County, North Carolina, married 5 Dec 1798 Sarah Taylor and had sixteen children who resided in Rutherford County, Georgia and Texas.
  4. Benjamin King, born 1 Feb 1777 in Bedford County, Virginia, died 10 May 1841 in Flat Rock, Henderson County, Cemetery, buried in the King Cemetery, married Rebecca Shipman, pastor of the Mud Creek Baptist Church at Flat Rock in Henderson County in 1828.
Hiram, son of Joseph, was born 25 Dec 1794, died 3 Aug 1891, was the father of fourteen children. His son, John Jones King, born 10 Oct 1821, married 26 Jul 1841 Rebecca Stepp and their eldest son, Hiram Woodfin King, born 31 Mar 1844, married Eliza Jane Phillips.
