Whitmill Hill was born 12 Feb 1743 in Bertie County, died 12 Sep 1797, Scotland Neck, Halifax County, North Carolina. He was a son of John Hill and Martha (Whitmill) Hill. Whitmill was educated at the University of Pennsylvania and served in all of the legislative bodies--Provincial, State and National. He was a member of the Provincial Congress which met at Hillsboro on 20 Aug 1775 and at Halifax on 4 April 1776; elected to the House of Commons from Martin County in 1777; Senator 1778-80; Speaker of the Senate in 1778; delegate from North Carolina to the Continental Congress; served until 1781. His letters to Governor Burke while a member of the Continental Congress at Philadelphia (1780) have been perserved. He died at Hill's Ferry, Martin County, North Carolina on 12 Sep 1797.
