Farrar of Virginia and North Carolina
The Farrar family of North Carolina descends from William Farrar (1594-1637), son of Nicholas (1546-1620) and his wife, Mary Woodenoth Farrar(died 1635) who came from England in 1618 and settled in Virginia. He was a member of the Council from 1623 to 1833. William was married to Cicely (died 1623), a widow of Capt. Samuel Jordan of "Jourdan's Journey."
Colonel William Farrar, son of William (above), was a burgess in Virginia 1659-61 and again in 1676. He was married to Mary. He died 1677/8.
Major William Farrar (1657-1721), son of Colonel William (above) of "Farrar's Island," in Henrico County, Virginia, served as a burgess from that county from 1700 to 1702. He married first (1682) Priscilla Baugh and second Jane, the widow of William Branch. After his death, Jane married (third) Abel Gower.
Thomas Farrar of Henrico County, son of William (above), died in 1731, was married to Mary, a daughter of Peter Field (died 1709) and his wife Judith widow of Henry Randolph, and served as burgess for Henrico County.
Peterfield Farrar (1730-1802/3), son of Thomas (above) was married in 1754 to Mary Magdelene Chastain, daughter of Dr. Stephen Chastain, a Huguenot immigrant to Manakintown and the widow of James Cock of "Malvern Hill."
John Farrar (1754-1806), son of Peterfield (above)lived in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, served in the American Revolution, owned 1900 acres of land in 1789, was married in 1775 to Rebecca Warthen.
Edward Farrar, son of John (above) married in 1805 Mary Minter.
William Minter Farrar (1807-1856), son of Edward (above), was married in 1833 to Julia Amy Bingham (1808-71), daughter of Robert Bingham (1775-1855).
William Bingham Farrar (1836-98), son of William Minter Farrar (above), was married 1864 to Martha David Watson (1848-1913), a daughter of Dr. David Watson (1794-1847).
William served in Company D, 35th Regiment C. S. A. during the Civil War. He was an inventor.
Dr. Mont Royal Farrar (1872-1929), son of William Bingham Farrar (above) resided in Greensboro, North Carolina. He was married in 1905 to Annie Lawrence Pleasants (born 1874). He practiced medicine in Greensboro, North Carolina and Nashville, Tennessee; served as First Lieu. in the Med Corps USA in 1917; promoted to captain in 1918; discharged in 1920. His service included a tour of duty at Ft. Moultire, South Carolina with the Coast Arty, Jackson Barracks, LA., Camp Wadsworth, SC, Camp Dix, NJ and Fox Hills, NY; oversears for one year. He received a medal for war service from France; also a medal from the State of North Carolina U. D. C. as S. C. V.
