Exum of Isle of Wight County, Virginia and Edgecombe County, North Carolina
William Exum came to Virginia with his wife Jane and son, Francis. On 27 Mar 1671 he witnessed a power of attorney from
William Bressy to Arthur Smith. On 9 June 1675 William Exum and Robert Harris witnessed a deed from Anthony Matthews and
wife Anne to John Moore, son of said Anne, for 300 acres in Isle of Wight on Seward Swamp for love and affection, it eing
part of 1300 acres patented by Matthews on 30 Jul 1660. On 29 April 1679 William Exum, planter of the Upper Parish of
Isle of Wight, purchased 300 acres from John and Mary Davis on the main swamp. In 1693 William Exum received a patent of
450 acres for the transportation of nine persons, viz: William Exum; Jane, his wife; Francis, his on; Richard Hickman;
Thomas Harlow; John Allison; ffra. Bullibant; Abra.Bralah; Samuel Browne. On 10 Dec 1694 William Exum was ordered to take
possession of the estate of Roger Stevens. William Exum and Jane, his wife, received the headrights of Richard Holiman
for 1230 acres on 25 April 1702.
The last will and testament of Jeremiah Exum leaves a cow to his cousin Jane Exum. William Exum made his will dated 3
Dec 1701 (Book 2, page 436). Issue:
- Francis Exum married Mary, her will daed 1749, probated 1752.Issue:
- Francis Exum died 1753 in Southampton County, named all his sisters in his will, his brother in law Thomas Williamson and
nephew, Exum Williamson.
- Elizabeth Exum married Smith.
- Olive Exum married Williamson.
- Mary Exum married Jordan.
- Ann Exum married Williamson.
- William Exum married Susannah. He witnessed a deed of John Portis and Jane his wife to John Brett dated 8 April 1696 (Book 1, page 199).
Afterhis death, Susannah joined in a deed with her son, John Exum, on 19 Aug 1772 and released her dower. The 1704
Quit Rent Rolls showed that he held 1440 acres in the Isle of Wight County. The will of William Exum was probated 22 Aug 1720.
Issue:
- John Exum married Elizabeth. He joined in a deed with his mother, Susan, where they deeded property left by his
father, William Exum,, on 18 Aug 1720. He removed to Edgecombe County, North Carolina, as per a deed dated 20 Nov 1752 in
Southhampton County (Book 1, page 495, when he deeded 350 acres of Benjamin Exum. His will dated 23 Jan 1775, probated April
1775 in Edgecombe County. Issue:
- Benjamin Exum married Martha. He was born ca 1725 in Virginia and removed to Edgecombe County, North Carolina
with his father about 1750. He was a resident od Dobbs County; his land fell into Wayne County. Served as a Minuteman in
the Revolutionary War and on the First Constitutional Convention of North Carolina; elected to the Senate in 1777 and
Treasurer of Newbern District in 1779. Issue:

- Tabitha Exum married Benjamin Smith of Wayne County, North Carolina.
- Ethelred Exum, Coroner of Edgecombe County, made his will dated 1779.
- Thomas Exum, maarried Mary.
- Sarah Exum married Ethelred Phillips of Edgecombe County.
- Elizabeth Exum married James Williams.
- Martha Exum marriied Miss Johnson.
- William Exum married Patience Purcell.
- Joseph Exum married Mrs. Elizabeth Jones, relict of Joseph Jones and daughter of William Kinchen.
- Robert Exum, died in Southhampton County (his will in Book 5, page 469).
- Ann Exum married Williamson. Her will dated 14 Mar 1752 Book 6, page 32).
- Sarah Exum married Thomas Mials.
- Deborah Exum married Edward Jones.
