Clayton of Transylvania Counties


Lambert Clayton, the son of George and Sarah (Dobson) Clayton was born 22 Jan 1755 in Dover, Kent County, Delaware, and died 12 Jul 1828 in Transylvania County, North Carolina. Lambert Clayton, Revolutionary War Soldier, enlisted in the war from Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He fought in the battles of Kings Mountain, Guilford Court House and Eutaw. After the war he returned to Catawba, in Rowan County and in 1782 was married to Sarah Davison (1759-1845), daughter of John "One Eye" Davidson and his wife Nancy (Brevard) Davidson (1741-1760), the latter of which were massacred by Indians in 1760 during the French and Indian War. Lambert and his wife settled in Rowan County near Ben Davidson's place on Davidson's Creek about 1791 (then Rutherford County). For his Revolutionary War service Lambert was granted over 1,000 acres of land along the Davidson and French Broad Rivers. He made his home on the river and died there in 1828. His wife died in 1845.   • Sarah Clayton, born 1796 married James Neill.
  • Rachel Clayton, born 1799 married William Brittain.
  • Henrietta Clayton, born 1802 married Elijah Young.
  • Ephraim Clayton, born 1804 married Nancy McElroy.
John Clayton (1785-1868) and his wife, Susan (1789-1873) had issue:
  1. Ruth Clayton, born 1807 married William Wilson, son of Capt. William Wilson.
  2. Ann Clayton, born 1809 married Richard O'Kelly.
  3. Sarah Clayton, born 1810 married Robert Bryson.
  4. Thomas Davidson Clayton, born 1812, married Mary Ann Lister.
  5. George Clayton, born 1814, married Malinda Posey.
  6. Jane Clayton, born 1817, married Capt. James Watt Killian.
  7. John Clayton, died young.
  8. Rachel Clayton, born 1821, married Seaborn Glazener.
  9. James Wiley Clayton, born 1823, married (1) Mary Stewart Young (2), her sister, Margaret L. Young.

  10. Elizabeth Clayton, born 1825, married Thomas Galloway.

  11. Ephraim Bradshaw Clayton, born 182i, married (1) Demeris Pattman (2) Mary Jane Osborne Wilson (3) Hattie Mackey Lankford.
  12. Mary Ann Clayton, born 1830, married Adam Smith; removed to Arkansas.
