Chambers of Haywood County


James Chambers came from Virginia and purchased land on the west side of the Pigeon River (south of Canton). He had three sons, viz: Joseph. William and Elihu.

Joseph Chambers went northwest where he fought in the Indian Wars, but finally settled down in the middle west. He was a member of the State Legislature four terms, 1813, 1815, 1819 and 1831.

Elihu Chambers had issue:

  • Amy Chambers, removed to California.
  • Abigail Chambers married Jeremiah Ratliff of Ratliff Cove.
  • Sarah Chambers married Jacob Evans; went to Tennessee.
  • Nancy Chambers married Ambrose Phall.
  • Peggy Chambers married Marion Hall; resided in Beaverdam township.
  • John Chambers served in the War of 1812 with General Jackson in Louisiana; never returned to Haywood County.
  • William Chambers removed to Georgia where he became a surveyor and mineralogist.
  • Joseph Chambers married Elizabeth Smathers, a daughter of Henry Smathers. Issue: Margaret who married J. F. Murray; Samuel married Sophia Davis, lived Iron Duff township; John, removed to Texas; Elihu, accidentally drowned; Lewis, died during the Civil War; Robert, removed to the State of Washington; Joseph, removed to the Great West, resided in Washington in 1934; Polly married and moved to Tennessee; Nancy married George Moore; Catherine married John Dyer; Maria married J. F. Murray who had previously married her sister Margaret; Adeline who married John Smith, resided in Clyde; and Lydia who married Marion Hall, resided in Clyde.
  • Lewis Chambers married Mary Ann Medford, a daughter of Jonas Medford. Issue: Strawder Chambers married Annie Long; Newton Chambers, settled in Pigeon township; Weston Chambers, settled in Pigeon township; James Chambers, settled Pigeon township near Retreat; Charity Chambers, married Ben Clark of Pigeon township; and Lydia Chambers who married James Evans of Pigeon.
