Bryan Family of Johnston and Bertie Counties

The Bryan ancestors date back to Governor William Bryan, of Thomond, Ulster, Ireland. It was from this man that a descendant, Needham Bryan, born 1690 in Ulster, came to America and settled in Bertie County about 1732 and died there in 1770. He was married in 1711 to Annie Ramsey (1695-1730).

Needham Bryan II, a member of the Colonial Assembly of North Carolina and of the Provincial Congress, was born 1725 and died in North Carolina. He was married first to Nancy Smith, a daughter oof Colonel John Smith of Cumberland County, North Carolina, and second to Elizabeth Whitfield.

Needham Bryan III was born 1750 and served as a Captain of a regiment of soldiers in Johnston County in 1750 and as a member of the Provincial Congress. In 1768 he was married to Sarah Hinton of Wake County, North Carolina and by her had four children: Loverd, Clement, Benjamin and Sally.

Clement Bryan was born 12 Oct 1770 in Johnston County and married Edith Smith, born 26 Dec 1772, died 15 Mar 1841, a daughter of Colonel David Smith of Cumberland County. They removed to Montgomery County, Georgia in 1805, later to Randolph County, georgia. Clement served in the Indian War of 1836 and was wounded in the battle of Ichawaynochaway.
