Brickell of Hertford County, North Carolina
In 1724 Dr. John Brickell came from England to North Carolina with Governor Burrington and settled at Edenton. Later, he went to Tennessee with a joint commission to the Cherokees.
Matthias Brickell was born 23 Mar 1724 in Winton, Hertford County, North Carolina and was married on 6 Nov 1748 to Rachel Noailles in Charleston, South Carolina.
In 1739 Rev. Matthias Brickell became the rector of St. John's Parish. He was the first clergyman to have a parish west of the Chowan River.
Parson Brickell died on 17 Oct 1788.
Colonel Matt Brickell, the eldest son of Rev. Brickell, was a member of the First Provincial Congress of Chowan County and during during the Revolutionary War. One of his daughters married Major Hardy Murfree; the other married John Brown. Colonel Brickell's sons, Thomas and John, served in the Legislature.
