STANTON Frank L., first Poet Laureate of Georgia, was born in Charleston, South
Carolina on February 22, 1857, the son of Valentine and Katherine Rebecca Stanton.
"During my early boyhood," said he, "it was my mother's custom to read to me from the
Methodist hymn book. I was brought up on Charles Wesley and Isaac Watts." He worked
as a copy boy for the Savannah Morning News. His verse attracted the attention of
Joel Chandler Harris, who was then an editorial writer on the News. In 1887, Stanton began publishing his own paper, The
Smithfield News, at Smithfield. That year he married Miss Leona Josey. Later, he
served on the staff of the Rome Tribune, and the Constitution in Atlanta.
He was proclaimed "Poet Laureate of Georgia" on February 22, 1925 by Governor Clifford
Walker. Among his poems -- Song of the Soil, Comes One with a Song, Songs from
Dixie, Up from Georgia, Little Folks Down South. He died in 1927. Ref: Kilowatt News,
