Wesleyan Female College Macon, Georgia
1850 Graduate Class

This was the first female college in Georgia, chartered on 23 December 1836, in Macon. It is now the world's oldest women's college. The college was founded through the efforts of a group of Macon citizens and the Georgia Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The newspapers of the day debated an interest in educating women. Articles were replete with pleas from husbands to educate their wives and daughters. The Reverend George Foster Pierce was elected president of the Georgia Female College in 1838, and the college opened our doors on January 7, 1839. The first class had 90 young women enrolled. Ninety young women were enrolled in its first session.
