Howell CobbCOBB, Howell, his photograph (painting) placed in the Boys' High School, Atlanta, in 1900. He was the son of John Addison Cobb of Granville County, North Carolina, and his mother was Sarah Rootes, the daughter of Colonel Thomas Reade Rootes of Fredericksburg, Virginia. Howell was graduated in 1834 from Franklin College, afterwards known as the University of Georgia. He married in 1835 at the age of nineteen, his bride being seventeen, Miss Mary Ann Lamar, daughter of Colonel Zacharias Lamar of Milledgeville. He was admitted to the bar in 1836 and was elected solicitor general in 1837, and to congress in 1844-1848-1848, and speaker of the house in 1849. Three years later he was appointed secretary of the treasury in President Buchanan's cabinet, which position he resigned in 1860. Ref: The Constitution, Atlanta, 1 June 1900
