The stage was tastefully decorated with flowers and presented a very handsome appearance. It was occupied by the graduating class, the faculty, Governor McDaniel, Mayor Hillyer, Rev. King, Walker, class of 1891, State University (Athens). "...is a native of Cave Spring, having been born in that town in 1866. He has made a remarkable record, too. He graduated from Hearn Institute, taking the Mercer scholarship and the elocution medal. Preferring to come to the unversity, he gave up his scholarship and entered sophomore at Athens. During his sophomore year, he took a soph speaker's place, won the Demosthenian debater's medal, and secured a place on the champion debate. Since then he has been elected anniversarian of the Demosthenian society, in which capacity he acquitted himself admirably.
