GordonGordon, John B. His portrait was hung in the galley at Boys' High School, Atlanta, in 1900. He was 35th governor of Georgia, and three times a United States Senator. He was born in Upson County, Georgia, 6 February 1832, and educated at the University of Georgia. He read and practiced law with his brother-in-law, Logan E. Bleckley. He served during the War Between the States, becoming in succession, major, lieutenant colonel, colonel, brigadier general, major general and lieutenant general, and at the close o f the war commanded one wing of General Lee's army. After the war, he settled in Atlanta, and was a member of the national unton convention held in Philadelphia in 1863. Mr. Gordon is a writer of no little note, as his article on 'College Life at Yale,' published in "Once a Week", will attest. He is a fine athlete, winning many prizes at the last field day, and making the 100 yards dash in 10 4-5 seconds. He is president of the Athletic association of the university, and has done much toward advancing athletics in college. He will practice law in Savannah, Ga."
