Marion is one of the counties to research for ancestors who migrated west into Alabama. Also, Meriwether, Muscogee, and Troup Counties. Marion County was created from Lee and Muscogee counties in 1827 by an Act of the General Assembly. Between 1827 and 1876, Marion County gave up land to Chattahoochee, Crawford, Macon, Muscogee, Schley, Sumter, Talbot, Taylor, and Webster Counties. Marion was named for General Francis\u00a0Swamp Fox<\/i>\u00a0Martin (1732-1795) of South Carolina, a Revolutionary War hero.
