1757-1760 Henry Ellis . Henry Ellis, known as an eccentric scientiest, was born on 29 August 1721 in Monaghan, Ireland, and was the son of Francis and Joan (Maxwell) Ellis,
1760-1782 James Wright . James Wright, an aristocrat, was born on 8 May 1716 in London, and was the son of Robert and Isabella Wright. In 1731, his father was appointed Chef Justice of South Carolina, and the family removed to Charleston. James married Sarah Maidman in 1742, and eight children were born to them.
1776-1777 Archibald Bulloch. Archibald Bulloch was the son of Reverend James Bulloch, a Scottish Presbyterian clergyman, who removed to Georgia about 1758. Archibald was married to Mary de Veaux on 9 October 1764, a daughter of Judge James de Veaux of Shaftesbury, Georgia. They had four children, viz: James, Archibald, Jane and William.
1777 Button Gwinnett. Button Gwinnett was born in 1735 at Down Hatherley, Gloucestershire, England, and was the son of Samuel and Anne (Emes) Gwinnett. He married Ann Bourne of Wolverhampton in 1757, and they had three daughters, viz: Amelia, Ann and Elizabeth Ann. He was a resident of Savannah. On 16 May 1777 he fought a dual in the street with General Lachlan McIntosh, and died three days' later, from wounds. He was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, from Georgia.
1777-1778 John Adam Treutlen. John Adam Treutlen was born about 1730 in Germany. His family was mong those persecuted Salzburghers attempting to escape to Pennsylvania in 1744. The escape failed because his ship was captured by the Spanish and he was thus carried off to Spain. The father died in prison, but his widow, Maria Clara Treutlen and her two surviving sons, John Adam and Frederick, were among those transported to Georgia at the Trustee's expense where they were indentured to a Swiss family in Vernonburg. John Adam married (1) Margared and (2) Mrs. Anne Unselt on 14 January 1778. Before his first wife died (while he was governor), they had five children, viz: Christiana Elizabeth, Jonathan (died in infancy), Dorothea, Hannah and John Adam.
1778-1779, 1784-1785 John Houstoun. John Houstoun was born about 1730 in Germany, and was the son of Sir Patrick Houstoun, Baronet, Registrar of Grants and Receiver of Quit Rents, and his wife, Priscilla (Dunbar) Houstoun, natives of Scotland. John married Hannah Bryan, the daughter of Jonathan Bryan, in 1775. He became a delegate to the Continental Congress.
1779-1780 John Wereat. John Weareat was born about 1730 in the western part of England. He was married to (the former) Hanna Wilkinson and they immigrated to Savannah in 1759.
1779-1780, 1789 George Walton. George Walton was born in Goochland (later Cumberland County), Virginia in 1749, and was the son of Robert and Mary (Hughes) Walton, who died when George was a young boy. He was raised by an uncle. In 1769, he removed to Savannah, and was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, from Georgia. He married Dorothy Camber, who survived him. George Walton died on 2 February 1804 and is buried in the Rosney Cemetery, but in 1848, his remains were removed to Augusta and reinterred beneath a monument erected in honor of Georgia's signers of the Declaration of Independence.
1780 Richard Howley was born about 1740 in St. John's Parish, Georgia. His home was in Sunbury. He died in Savannah in December of 1784.
1780-1781 Stephen Heard. Stephen Heard was born November of 1740 in Hanover County, Virginia, a son of John and Bridgett (Carroll) Heard, of Irish descent, who removed his family to Georgia in 1759. The family located on Fishing Creek, near Augusta, and were later granted 150 acres on Little River, where they established Heard's Fort (1773-1774). Stephen married Elizabeth Durden of Virginia in 1785, and they had nine children, viz: Barnard Carroll, Patsy Burch, George Washington, John Adams, Bridgett Carroll, Jane Lanier, Permelia Darden, Thomas Jefferson and Sarah Hammond. Stephen died on 15 November 1815 at his home in Elbert County, and was buried in the family cemetery at Heardmont.
1781-1782 Nathan Brownson. Nathan Brownson was born on 14 May 1742 in Woodbury, Connecticut. He married (1) Elizabeth Lewis (died 1775) in 1769 and (2) Elizabeth McLean. He had two children, viz: Nathan and Galen. He died at his plantation in Liberty County on 18 October 1796.
1782-1783 John Martin. John Martin was born about 1730 in Rhode Island. He removed to Georgia with his brother, James, in 1767, purchasing large adjoining plantations. The only known marriages is to Mary Deborah Spencer in 1783, however, he died in January of 1786.
1783-1784 Lyman Hall. Lyman Hall was born 12 April 1724 in Wallingford, Connecticut, the son of John and Mary (Street) Hall. He was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, from Georgia. He married (1) Abigail Burr in May of 1752 (she died 1753), and (2) Mary Osborne of Fairfield, Connecticut. By Mary he had a son, John.
1785-1786 Samuel Elbert. Samuel Elbert was born 1740 in Savannah or South Carolina, and was the son of William and Sarah Elbert. He died on 1 November 1788, and was buried at his home in Savannah, Rae Hall His remains were later reinterred in the Colonial Cemetery in Savannah. He was married in 1769 to Elizabeth Rae, and by her had six children.
1786-1787, 1789-1793 Edward Telfair was born 1735 at "Town Head" in Scotland. He lived in Virginia and North Carolina before settling in Georgia, about 1766. He married Sarah Gibbons in 1774 and had children, viz: Josiah, Thomas, Alexander, Mary, Sarah and Margaret. He died on 17 September 1807 and was buried in the Colonial Cemetery in Savannah, his remains later being reinterred in the Bonaventure Cemetery, Savannah.
1787-1788, 1793-1796 George Mathews was born on 30 August 1739 in Augusta County, Virginia, the son of John and Betsy Ann (Archer) Matthews. In 1793, he married ANne Paul in 1762 and by her had eight children. After her death, he married Margaret Cunningham Reed, a widow from Staunton, Virginia. In 1797, the Georgia Legislature granted them an divorce, and Matthews married again in 1804, this time to Mary Flowers Carpenter of Mississippi. He died 30 August 1812, and is buried in St. Paul's CHurchyard in Augusta.
1788-1789 George Handley was born on 9 February 1752 near Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. He was married to Sarah Howe, a niece of Governor Samuel Elbert, and resided in Augusta. He died at Rae's Hall in Augusta, in 1790.
1796-1798, 1806-1809 Jared Irwin. Jared Irwin was born 1750 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, the son of Thomas and Rebecca (Lawson) Irwin. The family settled in St. George's Parish (Burke County). He died at his home Union Hill in Washington County on 1 March 1818, where he is buried.
1798-1801 James Jackson. James Jackson was born on 21 September 1757 in Moreton-Hamstead, Devonshire, England, the son of James and Mary (Webber) Jackson. He married Mary Charlotte Young in 1785, the daughter of William Young of Savannah, and had eight children. Their sons - William, Henry, James, Jr., Jabez Young and Joseph Webber Jackson reached maturity, however, three daughters and one son died young. He died 19 March 1806 and was buried in the Congressional Cemetery in Washington, D. C.
1801 David Emanuel was born 1744 in Pennsylvania, the son of David Emanuel, Sr. (died 1768) of Virginia who later settled in St. George's Parish in Georgia. David married Ann Lewis and had six children, viz: John, Eli, Lewis, Mary Martha, Asenath, and Ann. David's siblings were: Asa, Levi, Amos, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Martha and Ruth. Emanuel died on 19 February 1808 at his home near Waynesboro.
1801-1802 Josiah Tattnall was born 1764 at Bonaventure near Savannah. He died on 6 June 1803 at New Providence, Nassau, British West Indies.
1802-1806 John Milledge. John Milledge was born 1757 in Savannah, the son of John and ANne (Smith) Milledge, who immigated with General Oglethorpe to Georgia on the Ann to Savannah in 1733. He was married to Mary Galphin (about 1786), the daughter of George Galphin, Indian Trader. After her death, he married Ann Lamar of Edgefield District, South Carolina on 28 May 1812 by whom he had three children, viz: John, Ann and Thomas. John died on 9 February 1818 and was buried between his two wives in the Summerville Cemetery, near Augusta.
1809-1813, 1815-1817 David Brydie Mitchell. David Brydie Mitchell was born 22 October 1766 in Muthill, Perthshire, Scotland. He came to Georgia to claim property left him by his uncle David Brydie, in 1782. In 1792, he was married to Jane Mills. He died at his home Mount Nebo, near Milledgeville, on 22 April 1837, where he is buried.
1813-1815 Peter Early was born on 20 June 1773 in Madison County, Virginia, and was the son of Joel and Lucy (Smith) Early. He married Ann Adams Smith of Virginia in 1797 and by her had six children, viz: Lucy, Augustus, Cynthia Anne, Thomas, Peter and Francis. He died at his home in Scull Shoals, Greene County, on 15 August 1817.
1817-1819 William Rabun was born 8 April 1771 in Halifax County, North Carolina, a son of Matthew and Sarah (Warren) Rabun. He was married to Mary Battle on 21 November 1793 and by her had one son and six daughters. He resided on his plantation in Hancock County where he was buried, however, his remains were later reinterred (1985) in the Powellton Baptist Church Cemetery.
1819 Matthew Talbot was born 1762 in Bedford County, Virginia, the son of John Talbot of the VIrginia House of Burgess. The story is that the father carried over 100 slaves to Wilkes County, Georgia after the Revolutionary War. Matthew died on 17 September 1827.
1819-1823 John Clark. John Clark was born on 28 February 1766 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, and was the son of Elijah and Hannah (Arrington) Clark. He was married to Nancy Williamson in 1792, a daughter of Colonel Micajah Williamson. He died in St. Andrews, Florida on 12 October 1832, and his wife died two weeks' later.
1823-1827 George Michael Troup. George Michael Troup was born on 8 September 1780 at McIntosh's Bluff, near Alabama, and was the son of George and Catherine (McIntosh) Troup. He married Ann St. Clare McCormick on 30 October 1803, who died a year later at their home in Bryan County. Next, he married Ann Carter (died 1828) of Albemarle County, Virginia on 8 Novembeer 1809, and by her had six children, viz: Coralie, Florida, George, Oralie, and two young children who died in infancy. George Troup died on 26 April 1856, and was buried on his plantatio Rosemont in Montgomery (now Truetlen) County.
1827-1829 John Forsyth. John Forsyth was born 1781 in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and was the son of Robert and Fanny Johnston (Houstoun) Forsyth. He married Clara Meighs on 12 May 1802, and by her had eight children, viz: Julia, Mary, Clara, John Jr., Virginia, Rosa, Anna and Robert. He died on 21 October 1841 at his home in Washington, D. C., and was buried in the Congressional Cemetery.
1829-1831, 1837-1839 George Rockingham Gilmer. George Rockingham Gilmer was born on 11 April 1790 in Wilkes (later Oglethorpe) County, Georgia, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Lewis) Gilmer, originally from Virginia. He was married to Eliza Frances Grattan from Virginia, and had no children. He died at his home in Lexington on 15 November 1859.
1831-1835 Wilson Lumpkin.Wilson Lumpkin was born on 14 January 1783 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, the son of John and Lucy (Hopson) Lumpkin who settled in Oglethorpe County. He married Elizabeth Walker on 20 November 1800 (died 1819) and by her had children: Lucy, Ann, Pleiades Orion, Wilson, William, Elizabet and two sons who died at birth. He died on 28 December 1870 and is buried in the Oconee Cemetery.
1835-1837 William Schley was born on 10 December 1786 in Frederick County, Maryland, and was the son of John Jacob and Anna Shelman Schley. He married Elizabeth Sarah Hargrove (died 11 February 1845) on 2 April 1822, and they had four children, viz: Anna Maria, William, George and Henry Jackson. He died on 20 November 1858 in Augusta.
1839-1843 Charles James McDonald. Charles James McDonald was born on 9 July 1793 in Charleston, South Carolina, the son of Charles and Mary Glas (Burn) McDonald, natives of Scotland who settled in South Carolina prior to the Revolutionary War. He married Anne Franklin (died 1835) of Macon in 1819, by whom he had three daughters and two sons. Afterwards, he married Elizabeth Roane Ruffin (in 1839), the widowed daughter of Judge Spencer Roane of Virginia. He died on 16 December on his plantation Kennesaw Hall in Cobb County.
1843-1847 George Walker Crawford. George Crawford Walker was born on 22 December 1798 in Columbia County, the son of Peter and Mary Ann Crawford. He married Mary Ann McIntosh on 4 May 1826 and they had four children, viz: William Peter, Sarah, Anna and Charles. He died on 27 July 1872, and he was buried in the Summerville Cemetery, near his home in Augusta.
1847-1851 George Washington Towns. George Washington Towns was born on 4 May 1801 in Wilkes County, the son of John and Margaret (George) Towns. He married Margaret Jane Campbell of Wilkes County, who died a week later, on 5 November 1826. He married second, Mary Jones Towns of Virginia . He died at his home in Macon on 15 July 1854.
1851-1853 Howell Cobb. Howell Cobb was born on 7 September 1815 in Jefferson County, the son of John and Martha (Rootes) Cobb. He married Mary Ann Lamar, and they had twelve children, viz: John Addison, Lamar, Howell Jr., Mary Ann Lamar, Sarah Mildred, Andrew Jackson, Elizabeth Craig, and five children who died in infancy. He died on 9 October 1868 at his home in Macon.
1853-1857 Herschel Vespasian Johnson. Herschel Vespasian Johnson was born on 18 September 1812 in Burke County, a son of Moses and Nancy (Palmer) Johnson. He married Ann Polk Walker in 1834, a daughter of Judge WIlliam Polk of Maryland and the niece of President James K. Polk. They had nine children, four sons and five daughters. He died on 16 August 1880 and was buried in the Old Louisville Cemetery at Louisville, Georgia.
1857-1865 Joseph Emerson Brown. Joseph Emerson Brown was born on 15 April 1821 at Long Creek, Pendleton District, South Carolina, and was the son of Mackay and Sally Rice Brown. He married Elizabeth Grisham on 13 July 1847, and they had eight children, viz: Julius Lewis, Mary Virginia, Joseph Mackey, Franklin Pierce, Elijah Alexander, Charles McDonald, Sally Eugenia, and George Marion. He died on 30 November 1894, and was buried in Oakland Cemetery, in Atlanta.
1865 James Johnson. James Johnson was born on 12 February 1811 in Robinson County, North Carolina, the son of Peter and Nancy (McNeil) Johnson. He died on 20 November 1891 and was buried in the Linwood Cemetery in Columbus.
1865-1868 Charles Jones Jenkins. Charles Jones Jenkins was born on 6 January 1805 in Beaufort District, South Carolina, the son of Charles Jones Jenkins. The family removed to Jefferson County, Georgia about 1817. He was married to Miss Sarah Jones (died 1849) of Burke County on 24 May 1832, and they had three children, viz: Mary, Charles and Sara. In 1854 he married again, Emily Gertrude Barnes, of Philadelphia.
1868 Thomas Howard Ruger. Thomas Howard Ruger was born on 2 April 1833 in Lima, New York, and was the son of Thomas Jefferson and Maria (Hutchins) Ruger, an Episcopal minister. He married Helen Lydia Moore in 1857 and they had two daughters, Helen and Anna. He died on 3 June 1907 in Samford, Connecticut.
1868-1871 Rufus Brown Bullock. Rufus Brown Bullock was born on 28 March 1834 in Bethlehem, New York, the son of Volckert Vreeder and Jane Eliza (Brown) Bullock. He married Marie Elizabeth Salisbury in 1860, from Pawtucket, Rhode Island. They had four children, viz: Volckert Vreeder, Rufus, Cornelia and Hugh. He died on 27 April 1907 in Albion.
1871-1872 Benjamin F. Conley. Benjamin F. Conley was born on 1 March 1815 in New Jersey. He married Sarah Semmes and had two sons, John L. and Morris J., and a daughter, Mary. He died on 10 January 1886 and was buried in the Magnolia Cemetery in Augusta.
1872-1877 James Milton Smith. James Milton Smith was born on 24 October 1823 in Twiggs County, and was the son of James M. Smith, Sr. He married (1) on 8 June 1848 to Hester Ann Brown (died 31 July 1880) and (2) Sarah Mashall Welborn on 1 September 1881. He died on 25 November 1890, and was buried in the Alta Vista Cemetery in Gainesville.

Common names in the same places that have been confused. His second wife was not Sarah. His second wife was Florida Abercrombie, the widow of Samuel Marshall Abercrombie. Florida was born 01 Feb 1840 in Russell Co., AL and died 15 Dec 1925 in Aiken, SC. He had no children by either wife, but Florida had 3 children by Samuel. Florida was the d/o Gen. Anderson Abercrombie and Sidney Grimes. Florida Smith Obit: widow of former Gov. of GA James Milton Smith, died in Aiken, SC, d/o Gen. & Mrs. Anderson Abercrombie, born Russell Co., AL, married Samuel Marshall Wellborn, Mar. 1, 1864, who died in 1874, married James Milton Smith in 1881, 1 dght, Mrs. Thomas H. Morgan of SC, 1 son, S. Marshall Wellborn of Columbus, GA, 4 g/ch. 1880 Muscogee Census: (enumerated as boarders in the HH of Robert Ware) Florida Welborn 39 AL GA GA, Florida 13 AL GA GA and Marshall 11 AL GA GA."
1877-1882 Alfred Holt Colquitt was born on 20 April 1824 in Walton County, the son of Senator Walter T. and Nancy (Lane) Colquitt. He died on 26 March 1894 in Washington, D. C. and was buried at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon.
1882-1883 Alexander Hamilton Stephens. Alexander Hamilton Stephens was born on 11 February 1812 in Wilkes County, the son of Andrew Baskins and Margaret (Grier) Stephens. He died on 4 March 1883 and was buried in Atlanta, later reinterred in Crawfordville.
1883 James Stoddard Boynton. James Stoddard Boynton was born on 7 May 1833 in Henry County, the son of Elijah S. and Elizabeth (Moffett) Boynton of Vermont. He died on 22 December 1902 and was buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery.
1885-1886 Henry Dickerson McDaniel was born 4 September 1836 in Monroe, the son of Ira Oliver and Rebecca (Walker) McDaniel. He died on 25 July 1926 at his home in Monroe, and was buried at Rest Haven Cemetery.
1886-1890 John B. Gordon. John B. Gordon was born on 6 February 1832 in Upson County, the son of Reverend Zachariah H. and Malinda (Cox) Gordon. He was married to Fanny Rebecca Haralson on 18 September 1854, the daughter of General Hugh Haralson of LaGrange. He died on 9 January 1904 in Miami, and was buried in the Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta.
1890-1894 William Jonathan Northen. William Jonathan Northen was born on 9 July 1835 in Jones County on the family plantation, the son of Peter and Louise (Davis) Northen. He was married to Martha Neal of Walton County on 19 December 1860 and had two children, Thomas and Annie Belle. He died on 25 March 1913, and was buried in the Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta.
1894-1898 William Yates Atkinson. William Yates Atkinson was born on 11 November 1854 in Oakland, Meriwether County, the son of John Pepper and Theodora (Phelps) Atkinson. He was married to Susie Cobb Milton on 23 February 1880 and had six children, viz: John, Lucille, William, Miriam, Bert and Georgia. He died on 8 August 1899 in Newnan, and was buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan.
1898-1902 Allen Daniel Candler. Allen Daniel Candler was born on 4 November 1834 in Auraria, Lumpkin County, the son of Daniel Gill and Nancy Caroline (Matthews) Candler. He was married to Eugenia T. Williams on 12 January 1864, of Jones County, and has children, viz: Eugenia, Florence, Marcus, Thomas, Hortense, William, Kate, John, Victor, Margaret and Benjamin. He died on 26 October 1910, and was buried in the Alta Vista Cemetery in Gainesville.
1902-1907 Joseph Meriwether Terrell. Joseph Meriwether Terrell was born on 6 June 1861 in Greenville, Georgia, a son of Dr. Joel E. G. Terrell and Sarah (Anthony) Terrell. He was married on 19 October 1886 Jessie Lee Spivey of Harris County. He died on 17 November 1912 at his home in Atlanta, and was buried in the City Cemetery in Greenville.
1907-1909, 1911 Hoke Smith was born on 2 September 1855 in Newton, North Carolina, the son of Hildreth H. Smith and Mary (Hoke) Smith. He was married to Marion Cobb on 19 December 1883, a daughter of General Thomas R. R. Cobb, and by her had four children, viz: Marion, Hildreth, Mary, Lucy and Callie. He died on 2 November 1931 and was buried in the Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta.
1909-1911, 1912-1913 Joseph Mackey Brown. Joseph Mackey Brown was born on 28 December 1851 in Cherokee County, the son of Joseph E. Brown (Civil War Governor of Georgia) and Elizabeth (Grisham) Brown. He married Cora McCord on 12 February 1889. He died on 3 March 1932 at his home in Marietta and was buried in the Oakland Cemetery, in Atlanta.
1911-1912, 1913-1915. John Marshall Slaton. John Marshall Slaton was born on 25 December 1866, son of Major William Franklin and Nancy (Martin) Slaton. He married Sally Francis Grant on 12 July 1898, of Atlanta. He died on 11 January 1955, and was buried in the Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta.
1915-1917 Nathaniel Edwin Harris. Nathaniel Edwin Harris was born on 21 January 1846 in Jonesboro, Tennessee, the son of Alexander Nelson and Edna (Haynes) Harris. He married Miss Fannie Burke of Macon on 12 February 1873, and by h er had seven children, viz: Carrie, Walter, Nat, Fannie, John, David and Nora. After Fannie died in 1898, he married Hattie Gibson Jobe on 6 July 1899. He died on 21 September 1929 at his summer home in Hampton, Tennessee, and was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon.
1917-1921 Hugh Manson Dorsey. Hugh Manson Dorsey was born on 11 July 1871 in Fayetteville, Georgia, the son of Rufus Thomas and Matilda (Bennett) Dorsey. He died on 11 June 1849 and was buried in the West View Cemetery in Atlanta.
1921-1923 Thomas William Hardwick. Thomas William Hardwick was born on 9 December 1872 in Thomasville, the son of Robert William and Zemula Schley (Matthews) Hardwick. He died in 1927 in Sandersville, and was buried at the Old City Cemetery in Sandersville.
1923-1927. Clifford Mitchell Walker. Clifford Mitchell Walker was born on 4 July 1877 in Monroe, a son of Billington Sanders and Alice (Mitchell) Walker. He married Rosa Carter Mathewson of Anderson County, South Carolina on 29 April 1902, and had three sons, Clifford, Sanders and Harold. He died on 9 November 1954 at his home in Monroe, and was buried at the Old Baptist Cemetery.
1927-1931. Lamartine Griffin Hardman. Lamartine Griffin Hardman was born on 14 April 1856 at Commerce, the son of WIlliam Benjamin Johnson and Susan Elizabeth (Colquitt) Hardman. He married Emma Wiley Griffin on 26 March 1907, and had four children, viz: Lamartine Griffin, Josephine Slaten, Sue Colquitt and Emma Griffin. He died on 18 February 1937, and was buried in the Gray Hill Cemetery at Commerce, Georgia.
1931-1933. Richard Brevard Russell, Jr.. Richard Brevard Russell, Jr. was born on 2 November 1897 in Winder, the son of Richard Brevard and Ina (Dillard) Russell. He died on 21 January 1971, and was buried in the Russell Family Cemetery in Winder.
1933-1937, 1941-1943. Eugene Talmadge. was born on 23 Sepgember 1884 near Forsyth, the son of Thomas Remalgus and Carrie (Roberts) Talmadge. He married Mattie Thurmond Peterson, a widow, on 12 September 1909, and had three children, Margaret, Vera and Herman (Later Governor of Georgia). He died on 21 December 1946, and was buried in McRae, Georgia.
1937-1941. Eurith DIckinson Rivers was born on 1 December 1895 in Center Point, Arkansas, the son of James Matthew and Millie Annie (Wilkerson) Rivers. He was married on 7 June 1914 to Mattie Lucile Lashley, and by her had two children, Eurith Dickerson, Jr. and Geraldine. He died on 11 June 1967 in Atlanta, and is buried in Lakeland, Georgia.
1943-1947. Ellis Gibbs Arnall was born on 20 March 1907 in Newnan, the son of Joseph G. and Bessie (Ellis) Arnall. He was married to Miss Mildred Slemons (died June 1980) of Orlando, Florida on 6 April 1935, and they had two children, Alice and Alvan. Secondly, he married Mrs. Ruby Hamilton McCord of Kentucky in July of 1981. He died on 13 December 1992 and was buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan.
1947-1948. Melvin Ernest Thompson was born on 1 May 1903 in Jenkins County, son of Henry J. and Eva (Edenfield) Thompson. He married Miss Ann Newton of Mellen on 3 February 1926. He died on 3 October 1980 in Valdosta and was buried in Riverview Memorial Mausoleum.
1948-1955 Herman Eugene Talmadge. Herman Eugene Talmadge was born on 9 August 1913 in Telfair County, the son of Governor Eugene and Mattie (Thurmond) Talmadge. He married (1) Kathryn Williams, a New York model, on April 1937 (divorced January, 1941); (2) Betty Shingler of Ashburn on 24 December 1941, and had two sons, Herman Eugene and Robert Shingler. He was divorced from Betty on 19 October 1977. He married (3) Lynda Cowart Pierce.
1955-1959. Samuel Marvin Griffin. Samuel Marvin Griffin was born on 4 September 1907 in Bainbridge, the son of Ernest H. and Josie (Butler) Griffin. He married Miss Mary Elizabeth Smith of Winchester, Virginia on 11 July 1931, and had children, Patricia Ann and Samuel Marvin, Jr. After the death of his first wife, he married (1971) Mrs. Laura Jane Gibson from Dublin (died 1982). He died on 13 June 1982, and is buried in the Oak City Cemetery in Bainbridge.
1959-1963 Samuel Ernest Vandiver, Jr.. Samuel Ernest Vandiver, Jr. was born on 3 July 1918 in Franklin County, the son of Samuel Ernest and Vanna (Osborne) Vandiver. He married Sybil Elizabeth Russell of Winder on 3 September 1947.
1963-1967. Carl Edward Sanders. Carl Edward Sanders was born on 15 May 1925 in Augusta, the son of Carl T. and Roberta (Alley) Sanders.
1967-1971 Lester Garfield Maddox was born on 30 September 1915 in Atlanta, the son of Dean and Flonnie (Castleberry) Maddox. He married Hattie Virginia Cox in May of 1936, and had children, Linda, Virginia, Lester, Jr. and Larry.
1971-1975 James Earl Carter, Jr.. James Earl Carter, Jr. was born on 1 October 1924 in Plains, Sumter County, Georgia, the son of Earl Carter and Lillian (Gordy) Carter.
1975-1983 George Dekle Busbee. George Dekle Busbee was born on 7 August 1927 in Vienna, Georgia, the son of Perry and Nell Busbee.
