Sapelo Island, Georgia

Sapelo Island is inhabitated by a few hundred residents. When I visited the island, it was having a "burn-off" of old vegetation. The first Light House on Sapelo was built in 1820 but was damaged by the 1898 hurricane. In 1905 another structure was built a few hundred yards away and was referred to as a skeletal lighthouse, made of cast iron. The second one was deactivated during the bad economy of 1933 and it was dismantled and moved to South Fox Island on Lake Michigan. However, the concrete base remains.
