Strozier Duncan of Wilkes County
April 14, 2009. I have been unable to discover any additional Georgia information in the records. Jeannette Austin.
Jeannette,
Here is a mystery that has puzzled folks for years. Perhaps you can shed some light on it.
Peter Strozier came to this country from Germany to Philadelphia in 1751 on the ship Patience. His father Johan Peter Strozier (Stroher on the passenger list), probably settled in Dover, PA. He is supposedly buried at the Strayer Church in Dover, PA.
When Johan Peter Stroher/Strozier petitioned the government to sell his land in Germany, he said that he had 6 children. According to Shirley Kinney (who did a book on the descendants of Peter Strozier) her mother told that Peter had a sister and 3 brothers, who migrated south from Pennsylvania. The sister's name was Esther/Hester or Hetty, and she probably married in North Carolina.
Peter was born about 1740. According to his wife Margaret's pension application, she said that she and Peter married in Rowan County, NC in 1758. Later they settled in Wilkes County along Kettle Creek. Peter received a land grant for 600 acres to build a grist mill in Wilkes County, and he received other bounty land in Franklin County for his service as a Revolutionary Way Soldier. He was at the Battle of Kettle Creek, and his name appears on the monument there.
There was a John M. Strowser on the 1790 census of Orangeburgh, SC. He may have been Peter's brother. His middle name may have been Martin.
When Peter died, a bond was made among all heirs for partition of his estate, dated 11 Feb. 1807. The bond and following deeds were signed by the Peter's sons and the husbands of his daughters.
The children of Peter and Margaret Strozier:
Elizabeth Strozier, b. 1 Sept. 1765/6 m. George W. Darden
Margaret Strozier, b. 8 Feb. 1768, m. Acton Nash
Barbara Strozier, b. 18 Feb. 1771, m. William Lunceford
Peter Strozier, Jr. b. 18 June 1773, m. Priscilla Sherman
Mary "Polly" Strozier, b. 8 Aug. 1775, m. Majors Henderson
Esther Strozier, b. 1 Jan. 1778, m. John R. Peteet
John Martin Strozier, b. 11 Sept. 1780, m. Ann Bennett (my ancestor)
Reuben Strozier b. 5 July 1782, m. Pheraby Callaway
William Strozier, b. 30 July 1783/5, m. Elizabeth Milburn
-----------------------------
NOW we get to the mystery:
There was a Charles Strozier b. 1787 in Georgia. He is on the 1830 census of Monroe Co. He is on the 1840 -70 census of Bibb County.
Charles's children:
John M. Strozier b. 1816/18, m. Delay Laney
Eveline Strozier b. 1820, m. Melcher Wadsworth
Samuel Gathright Strozier, b. 17 July 1822, m. Louisa Woodson (moved to Louisiana about 1860)
Mary Strozier, b. 1823 m. William Wiggins
William Strozier, b. 1826/27, m. Egla Ann Allen
Shirley Kinney provided me with the children of the grandchildren of Charles Strozier, and NONE of them are named Peter.
Who was the father of Charles Strozier, b. 1787?????
If Charles was born in Georgia, what other Stroziers lived in Georgia then?
Where did he and Mary marry?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Phyllis
