My Great grandfather James Gordon Smith was born: April 1865 in I believe Monticello Georgia. He moved to Lisbon Arkansas and was married to Ida Holt Fanning in 1887 (Her father John Thomas Fanning was born in Georgia moved from Georgia 1855 to Lisbon Arkansas ,Same for her mother Mary Ann Rebecca Robinson Georgia born in 1835 Georgia.) They had 3 living children Charles Henry Smith 1889[ my grandfather}, Nannie Irene Smith 1896, Robert Gordon Smith 1897. They moved to New Orleans La, 1800 to early 1900’s. He passed away in New Orleans LA : July 7 1943 I have a death certificate that shows he was a resident of Monticello Georgia. I have no other information on him or his parents. Thank you for your help. Sharon Phillips cphill9510@att.net

Dear Jeannette Austin, I have attached the picture of James Gordon Smith death certificate. It shows he was a native of Monticella Georgia. I know that he lived in Ft Worth Texas with my father his namesake and My grandfather and grandmother 1940 census. Sometime after that he moved back to Louisiana. There he lived with my Uncle Robert Gordon Smith until he passed away. The only other information was letters from Lucy J Webb also from Georgia. She sent us letter's about her time as a Methodist Missionary in China. We referred to her as Aunt Lucy, but I was told she really was not our Aunt. I mention this only because I was hoping that maybe there might be a connection with one of the Methodist churches in Georgia. Thank you for any . Sharon Phillips,

I have searched the Jasper County Census Records from 1850 to 1900 and have good news! James Gordon was the son of Henry and Lucy Smith. Henry Smith was the son of Asa and Martha Smith. I compared all of the census records and the results were accurate.
1870 Jasper County
Monticello, Georgia, page 497 B.
Henry Smith 27 farmer GA
Lucy 25 GA
William 6 GA
James G. 4 GA
Notes: This Henry Smith was listed as a son of Asa Smith on the 1850 Jasper Census and was with Asa on the 1860 Stewart County Census. No further record of Henry in Stewart County. However, he was on the 1870 Jasper county Census. He must have returned to Jasper County to marry. I was unable to find Henry in Georgia in 1880. And so the question arises as to where his sons, James G. and William were in 1880. So, her it is:
Monticello. 74th District., page 94 A:
Maddux James | W M 67 | . . | . X . . | farmer | . . . . . | . . . | Georgia Ga Ga |
| Maddux Lucy Ann | W F 55 | . wife | . X . . | . | . . . . . | . . . | Georgia Va Va |
Smith James | W M 13 | . nephew | X . . . | laborer | . . . . . | . . . | Georgia Ga Ga
Smith Sallie | W F 9 | . niece | X . . . | .
James Maddux was married to Lucy Ann C. Broaddus on Nov. 26, 1839 in Jasper County. Even though this Lucy's birthdate fits exactly to Lucy, wife of Henry Smith, these are two separate people. James Smith, age 13. This is a perfect fit. Since Sallie was born in 1871, she was the last child. Therefore, the father, Henry died between 1871 to 1879. Perhaps this Lucy married after the death of James Maddux to a Mr. Webb. This explains the situation that she was not really the Aunt. My guess is that she was a sister of Asa Smith who married James Maddux, then Webb (a great-aunt). If that is not the case, then a couple not related took care of them and that would also explain why she was referred to as Aunt Lucy. That would mean that both parents (Martha and Henry) died before 1879. As to the sibling William who would have been 16 years of age in 1880, none of the William's were an exact fit.
1850 Jasper County Census
Asa Smith 26 GA
Martha 26 GA
Henry 6 GA
Nancy 4 GA
Mary 1 GA
1860 Stewart County Census
Asa 38 GA
Martha 41 GA
Henry 118 GA
Nancy 13 GA
Mary 11 GA
John 5 GA
1870 Stewart County Census
Asa 48 GA
Martha 47 GA
Mary 19 GA
John 15 Ga (he moved to Barbour Co. AL)
Syntha 5 GA.
Conclusion. I think that the census records above pretty well establish two generations in your genealogy.
