My uncle
has been the torchbearer for our family research and I have only recently more
than casually picked it up. Personally it is know to me that my GG grandfather
was Allison Culpepper Sanders born in 1829 in Twiggs

Hi,
markers! I have recently upgraded to 25 markers. It would really
narrow
everything down if you would upgrade, too. But until then, I'll be happy
to
exchange information so we can see if we can make a good paper trail.
I have traced my earliest ancestor back to Nahum Sanders in Granville Co.,
NC in 1766 and am attaching a PDF file of some of his descendants (scroll
down on the first page to see the cover page). One of Nahum's sons was
named Mary/Merry Arthur Sanders (1799 Granville Co., NC; d. 1856
There is a Merry Arthur Sanders (b. 1783
who married Elizabeth Hunter, soI'll attach that
file, too. I have tried
for years to connect the two Merry Arthur Sanders since Nahum's family often
named their children after older siblings. You just may be the key to
connecting these two families!
If you have any information on your ancestors that you would like to share,
please do so. And if you want any more information from me, I'll be happy
to send it to you.
If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer, go toGoogle and it
will direct you to their free reader so you can read PDF files.

Biographical
On October 26, 1767 Nahum was a witness
to the will of Robert Droghon (Draughon)
of Granville Co., NC. Other witnesses included: Philip Lock and
James Badgit.
Executors were Robert Draughon's wife, John Badgit of Granville Co. and William Badgit
of Orange Co., NC.
The 1769 Granville Co. Tax Roll for the
Tar River District shows Nahum Sanders, 1 white and 7 black. Nahum is also on
the 1771 Granville Co. tax list.
A Jesse Sanders is also on the 1771
Granville Co. tax list - this could not be Nahum's son Jesse who wasn't born
until 1780 - perhaps a brother, or the
Jesse who married Annie Yancey?
The 1782 Surry Co. tax list shows Neman

inherited property to

October 21, 1816, Book 6, page 74. This deed states that this property was part
of a 250 acre "tract of land granted to Naaman
Sanders by
grant dated the 8th day of March 1782."
The property was situated on Blues Creek and the surrounding properties were
Ludwig's corner, Jones' line, and
Blackburne (&/H.?) Dobson; witnesses were
Benjamin Sanders and W. Floyd Sapp. So far we have not been able to locate this
grant in either Stokes or
Surry counties. Nahum's widow Susannah sold her dower's
share to her son Benjamin on July 9, 1810; this property was bounded by corner
of Samuel

and amounted to 220 acres, part of a tract granted to henry

perhaps Nahum was a minister.

When Mary Lu got a computer in 1994 and
got on the internet she soon became "hooked" on genealogy and has met
many descendants of Nahum's
children online. We are still looking for more of
Nahum's descendants. And the quest goes on for locating Nahum's ancestors.
In April 2000 Don and Mary Lu traveled to
Granville Co., NC and researched the records in the genealogy section of their
library. They found:
Granville Co. Deed Book H, pg. 54: James
and Margaret Cash sold Joseph Miller 200 acres of land on November 16, 1766.

Sanders. This places Nahum in Granville Co. in 1766, a year earlier than
previously found.
The names Robert Gilliam, John Tully,
Richard Briggs, William Moore and Joseph Miller were found in the 1769 tax
records. These names were also

There were several other Sanders families
in Granville Co. listed between 1755 and 1782 (when Nahum moved to Stokes Co.).
They were James, John
Sr. and John Jr., Luke,
Jesse and Robert.
This Jesse and his wife Annas Yancey sold property on
October 19, 1769. Several researchers have tried, but
been unable, to connect this family with
Nahum.
On March I, 1770 Nahum Saunders witnessed
the will of Milhas Miars.
(Note: in both the Jesse sale of property above and the Miars

been mentioned in the 1816 sale of land by
his son Mary Arthur to James Raby. It was easy to see
why none of the researchers had been able to find this
grant even though they had been looking for it
for 20 years. The card file read "Norman Sanders," the abstract book
read "Nathan Landers," and the
envelope containing the original grant read
"Naaman Saunders." Had Mary Lu not
recognized the names of the surrounding property owners, the grant
may have remained hidden for another 20
years.

Mr. Fred L. Layton, a descendant of
Nahum's son Benjamin, reports that Susannah attended Quaker meetings after
Nahum's death. He states that there
were Sanders, Jordans
and Beesons among the Quakers in Virginia near the
James River in the 1600's and refers to the Hinshaw
Quaker Books and the
John Boddie Books.
The 1799 Stokes Co. Property Valuation
list shows "Susannah Sanders, Bynums District
with house and outhouse at a value of $70; plus 250 acres with a
value of $250." On July 9, 1810 she sold
220 acres of this land to her son Benjamin. When Nahum died he willed his
eldest son Arden, 100 acres and his
second son, Mary Arthur, 150 acres. This
accounts for all of the original property owned by Nahum with the exception of
130 acres.
Susannah is found on the 1810 Stokes Co.,
NC census as "Widow Sanders." And the 1810 Stokes Co. census on
manufacturing showed that she had
manufactured 200 yards of fabric with a value of $100.

Mary Arthur and his wife Louisa Loudeback had a daughter Hannah Miranda who was born in

Arthur would have been 70 when the census
was taken. Unfortunately, census workers were known to make mistakes in
recording names, as were those
transcribing the information into the census books. I
do believe this is our Mary Arthur. If so, he must have married again after his
