Sanders of Twiggs County

Work in Progress.

Hi Jeanette,

My uncle has been the torchbearer for our family research and I have only recently more than casually picked it up. Personally it is know to me that my GG grandfather was Allison Culpepper Sanders born in 1829 in Twiggs county Ga. He lived a while in Crawford County Georgia, and died in Decatur co. in 1901. My uncle after a very long time period determined that his father was Daniel Sanders.

Attached though an allied families website is our linage.

http://www.tribalpages.com/tribes/chappie623

Password is mytribalpages Look @ Daniel Sanders father of Allison C.

I know that the info about Daniel being born in Crawford County is incorrect because Crawford din not exist @ this time. And we know that Allison was born in Twiggs. I’m only partially convinced that Daniel was Allison’s father anyway.

To add another wrinkle. I had my DNA run and found a perfect 12 marker match to a fellow out of North Carolina. I’ll forward some of our correspondence to you. It’ll be nice to see if you can help. I’ve additionally bought a couple of books of reconstructed records of Twiggs County, but I believe that Wilkinson and Pulaski counties may have some clues.

Thanks for your help.

Hi, Gary - this is great!!  You are my very first 100% match on my 12
markers!  I have recently upgraded to 25 markers.  It would really narrow
everything down if you would upgrade, too.  But until then, I'll be happy to
exchange information so we can see if we can make a good paper trail.

I have traced my earliest ancestor back to Nahum Sanders in Granville Co.,
NC in 1766 and am attaching a PDF file of some of his descendants (scroll
down on the first page to see the cover page).  One of Nahum's sons was
named Mary/Merry Arthur Sanders (1799 Granville Co., NC; d. 1856 Ohio).
There is a Merry Arthur Sanders (b. 1783 Virginia; d. 1832 Jasper Co., GA)
who married Elizabeth Hunter, soI'll attach that file, too.  I have tried
for years to connect the two Merry Arthur Sanders since Nahum's family often
named their children after older siblings.  You just may be the key to
connecting these two families!

If you have any information on your ancestors that you would like to share,
please do so.  And if you want any more information from me, I'll be happy
to send it to you.

If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer, go toGoogle and it
will direct you to their free reader so you can read PDF files.

Biographical

On October 26, 1767 Nahum was a witness to the will of Robert Droghon (Draughon) of Granville Co., NC. Other witnesses included: Philip Lock and

James Badgit. Executors were Robert Draughon's wife, John Badgit of Granville Co. and William Badgit of Orange Co., NC.

The 1769 Granville Co. Tax Roll for the Tar River District shows Nahum Sanders, 1 white and 7 black. Nahum is also on the 1771 Granville Co. tax list.

A Jesse Sanders is also on the 1771 Granville Co. tax list - this could not be Nahum's son Jesse who wasn't born until 1780 - perhaps a brother, or the

Jesse who married Annie Yancey?

The 1782 Surry Co. tax list shows Neman Sanders with 0 horses, 4 cows and 250 acres on Blews Creek in Capt. Cook's District. The 1790, 1791, Stokes

Co., NC tax lists show Nahum owned 600 acres and in 1797, 1798 and 1799 the same property is listed under "Widow Sanders." These listings are all in

Capt. Robinson's District. After his death the property was inherited by Nahum's two eldest sons Arden and Mary Arthur. Arden inheritated 100 acres

bordering William Dobson, Michael Fair and Ben Watson. We do not have a record of his selling this land. Mary Arthur sold his inherited property to

James Raby on October 21, 1816, Book 6, page 74. This deed states that this property was part of a 250 acre "tract of land granted to Naaman Sanders by

grant dated the 8th day of March 1782." The property was situated on Blues Creek and the surrounding properties were Ludwig's corner, Jones' line, and

Blackburne (&/H.?) Dobson; witnesses were Benjamin Sanders and W. Floyd Sapp. So far we have not been able to locate this grant in either Stokes or

Surry counties. Nahum's widow Susannah sold her dower's share to her son Benjamin on July 9, 1810; this property was bounded by corner of Samuel

Young's land, Marshall and Hairston lines and amounted to 220 acres, part of a tract granted to henry Hampton, Surry Book C, folio 143; George Fulp

witnessed the transaction.

Among items listed in the inventory of Nahum's estate were a Bible, Hymnal, Testament, sermon book and speller, so perhaps Nahum was a minister.

That is quite possible since his son, Arden, was a Baptist minister as was Arden's son Mary Arthur. In a little leather wallet on which was written "Nahum

Sanders, his pocketbook," and handed down in the family, were several poems. So it is thought that Nahum was a learned man. Gola Berry has that

wallet.

A lot of the early work on Nahum Sanders and his son Arden was done by Gola Berry, an Arden descendant, and distributed in the form of a photocopied

book to family members in 1978. Don (also an Arden descendant) and Mary Lu Sanders, picked up where Gola left off by going to the North Carolina

Archives in Raleigh where they were able to hold Nahum's original will, inventory of his estate, and the little leather bound Granville Co. Tax List of

1769 in their hands - exciting. Also, Don and Mary Lu were able to locate the approximate area of Nahum's property in Stokes Co. on Belews Creek with

the help of a cartographer and actually walk on a portion of that land (most of the property is now under Belew's Lake). Nahum's will is on file at the

North Carolina Archives in Raleigh and Mary Lu and Don have a photocopy.

When Mary Lu got a computer in 1994 and got on the internet she soon became "hooked" on genealogy and has met many descendants of Nahum's

children online. We are still looking for more of Nahum's descendants. And the quest goes on for locating Nahum's ancestors.

In April 2000 Don and Mary Lu traveled to Granville Co., NC and researched the records in the genealogy section of their library. They found:

Granville Co. Deed Book H, pg. 54: James and Margaret Cash sold Joseph Miller 200 acres of land on November 16, 1766. Witness: Nahom Sanders;

proved by Nahom Sanders. This places Nahum in Granville Co. in 1766, a year earlier than previously found.

The names Robert Gilliam, John Tully, Richard Briggs, William Moore and Joseph Miller were found in the 1769 tax records. These names were also

listed in note pad Gola Berry found in Nahum's "pocket book."

In an early history of Granville Co., "Baptists were present in colonial Granville in greater numbers than any other denomination. In 1755 there were

three established Baptist congregations. One was at Old Shearman's on the Tar River." Nahum lived in the Tar River Valley and was probably a Baptist

as his son Arden and Arden's son Mary Arthur were.

page 9

There were several other Sanders families in Granville Co. listed between 1755 and 1782 (when Nahum moved to Stokes Co.). They were James, John

Sr. and John Jr., Luke, Jesse and Robert. This Jesse and his wife Annas Yancey sold property on October 19, 1769. Several researchers have tried, but

been unable, to connect this family with Nahum.

On March I, 1770 Nahum Saunders witnessed the will of Milhas Miars. (Note: in both the Jesse sale of property above and the Miars will "Landers" is

shown in parentheses. The old "S" is frequently read as "L." )

Other interesting information found: Early Edgecombe Co. records list the following Sanders: Luke, Abraham, David, Jacob, Jesse and John. There was

a "Sanders Corner" in Halifax Co. Granville Co. was formed from Edgecombe Co. in 1746 and Halifax was formed from Granville in 1758.

The Tar River District is located off State Road 1635, near Hester, North Carolina.

In January 2001 Mary Lu and Don traveled to the State Archives in Raleigh, North Carolina and were finally able to find Nahum's land grant which had

been mentioned in the 1816 sale of land by his son Mary Arthur to James Raby. It was easy to see why none of the researchers had been able to find this

grant even though they had been looking for it for 20 years. The card file read "Norman Sanders," the abstract book read "Nathan Landers," and the

envelope containing the original grant read "Naaman Saunders." Had Mary Lu not recognized the names of the surrounding property owners, the grant

may have remained hidden for another 20 years.

Spouse: SANDERS, Susannah (maiden name unknown) 1-1

Biographical

Mr. Fred L. Layton, a descendant of Nahum's son Benjamin, reports that Susannah attended Quaker meetings after Nahum's death. He states that there

were Sanders, Jordans and Beesons among the Quakers in Virginia near the James River in the 1600's and refers to the Hinshaw Quaker Books and the

John Boddie Books.

The 1799 Stokes Co. Property Valuation list shows "Susannah Sanders, Bynums District with house and outhouse at a value of $70; plus 250 acres with a

value of $250." On July 9, 1810 she sold 220 acres of this land to her son Benjamin. When Nahum died he willed his eldest son Arden, 100 acres and his

second son, Mary Arthur, 150 acres. This accounts for all of the original property owned by Nahum with the exception of 130 acres.

Susannah is found on the 1810 Stokes Co., NC census as "Widow Sanders." And the 1810 Stokes Co. census on manufacturing showed that she had

manufactured 200 yards of fabric with a value of $100.

Biographical

1810 Stokes Co., North Carolina census lists Elizabeth Sanders with children Newell and Sarah. Much of the information on Elizabeth Sanders and John

Sapp comes from descendants Patsy Jo Sapp and Ethel Huckaby.

Spouse: SAPP, John V 13-1

John SAPP was born in Calvert Co., Maryland on ABT 1764. He died in Shelby Co., Texas on 1851. He was the son_of

Benjamin SAPP and Dorothy SAPP.

Biographical

Much of the early Sapp information comes from an article in the Winter 1982 issue of the Maryland Historical Society by Patsy Jo Corrigan. Other

information supplied by Vesnelle Rorris and Kathy Lumsden.

Following is the result of research by a Mr. Henry as found on ancestry.com:

"The first record of John Sapp is as a chain bearer in surveying a 200 acre tract which his father assigned to John's brother Jesse in 1786. John is on the

1790 census of Stokes Co., NC. John's first wife was Elizabeth Sanders, daughter of Nahum and Susanna Sanders and he is mentioned in Nahum's will of

1795. In 1790 John Sapp purchases 200 acres on Lick Creek in Stokes Co. From the 1800 and 1810 census it would appear that John and Elizabeth had

three sons and a daughter born between 1790 and 1794 and a fourth son born between 1794 and 1800. Another son, Thomas, was born in 1803/4. John

was involved with several land transactions on Lick and Belews Creeks during the mid-1790's. John turns up in Franklin Co., GA in 1803 and is listed on

the tax rolls with 150 acres on Stephens Creek and 7 Negros. In 1804 John sells a 100 acre tract back in Stokes Co., NC and is noted as John Sapp of

Franklin Co., GA. On Dec. 24, 1796 the Augusta Chronicle carries an advertisment: 'The subscriber takes this method to inform the public that he has set

up shop in Louisville: Clocks and watches will be cleaned and repaired, and upheld for 12 months; gold and silver ware will be made and sold, and old

ware repaired; suveyor's compasses likewise. Any person that will favour me with their business, shall have their work done on the shortest notice, and

most reasonable terms - signed John Sapp, clock and watchmaker, Louisville, Dec. 20, 1796.'

" His second wife was Elizabeth King, possibly the Elizabeth King who was his first wife's sister-in-law. John and his second wife had five children.

Apparently Elizabeth King suffered from the complications of childbirth and died died shortly after the last child, Benjamin, was born.

"Sometime after the 1805 lottery, John moved his new family to Rhea Co., TN where he bought land on Pine Creek and operated a mill.

"In December of 1814 John married Winifred Anderson. Her maiden name is thought to have been Foster and her mother may have been a Chocktaw

Indian. They had five children.

"John moved to Blount Co., Alabama between 1828 and 1830 and left there for Texas between 1833 and 1850.

"John is listed in the 1850 Shelby Co., Texas census as a clockmaker, 86 years old.."

A lot of the early information on Arden and his family is from Gola Berry's document "The Sanders Family" written in 1968-70. Additional information

came from the Hawkins County Historian and other sources cited below.

(H)arden Sanders is listed as a white poll by the Gillenwaters Company in 1809 and 1810 with 75 acres of land, and in 1811 with 150 acres in Hawkins

Co., Tennessee.

(H)arden Sanders bought 150 acres of land from John Thompson for $200 on June 2, 1810; recorded May 11, 1811; deed book 6, page 328.

On March 14, 1812 Arden bought 25 acres from Daniel Jackson for $90; recorded December 22, 1814, deed book 6, page 328.

On June 15, 1813 Arden Sanders bought 25 acres of land from William Groce, Sr., William Groce, Jr. and Cornelius Groce for $60, recorded September

10, 1813, deed book 3, pg. 251.

On August 3, 1815 Ardin Sanders bought 27 acres of land from Peter Clipper for $162; recorded August 20, 1816; deed book 3, page 517.

(H)arden sold 70 acres to Thomas Ingram for $140 on November 15, 1816 recorded June 24, 1817, deed book 7, page 17.

On November 15, 1816 (H)arden Sanders bought 21 acres from Thomas Ingram for $120, proved June 24, 1817, deed Book 7, pg. 19.

On September 23, 1831 Tennessee Grant #17042 to Arden Sanders (Entry 689 dated May 20 1826 by Andrew Sanders) 150 acres to said Andrew Sanders

on the north side of the Holstons, waters of Big Creek (Arden Sanders has title); recorded November 24, 1834 deed book 15, pg. 151.

On January 12, 1835 Arden Sanders sold 37 acres to John Shanks. David Sanders, witness; recorded May 20, 1836; deed book 15, pg. 404.

On January 2, 1837 Arden Sanders sold 100 acres in Stanley Valley Knobs to John Shanks; recorded December 28, 1837.

On February 13, 1844 Nahum Sanders and Arden Sanders sold 135 acres in Standley Valley on the waters of Big Creek to Jacob Simmons for $450.

Benjamin R. Sanders witnessed; recorded February 28, 1844, deed book 18, pg. 659.

Arden is listed in the 1830 Hawkins Co. Tennessee Census as age 52, and also listed in the 1840 Hawkins Co. census records. In 1850 Arden is listed as

"Hardin" with son Benjamin (Richard), age 28, b. Tennesse; Jesse, age 4, and Reuben 3 months old. This would be Arden's son Benjamin Richard and

Benjamin Richard's two older children.

Arden is said to have moved to Jefferson Co., Tennessee about 1845.

A Roots Web site ( www.rootsweb.com/~tnhawkin/hcmin.htm ) shows Arden Sanders as Pastor of the Hickory Cove Baptist Church and his name appears

frequently in their church minutes of 1820-1836. He is first shown as Brother Arden Sanders and in April of 1832 on page 28 of the minutes as Brother

Arden Sanders, Pastor. An Elizabeth Sanders is also listed in the church membership and we would assume that was Arden's wife Elizabeth.

On page 49 of the Hickory Cove Baptist Church Minutes it states that on a Saturday in January of 1834 the church "opened a door to receive members

Mary Arter Sanders and Nancy after relating to the church the work of God on their souls and that God for Christ Sake had pardoned their sins. The right

hand of fellowship given by Arden Sanders, Pastor...The Baptism was perfomed in Cove Creek the following day." The new members were, of course,

Arden's brother Mary Arthur and his wife Nancy. In later entries Mary Arthur is shown as Clerk of the Church. And on the fifth Saturday of December

1838 Arden's son Elder Clemmons Sanders delivered the sermon.

Hickory Cove Church is still in existence in March 2000 at 1818 Highway 70 North in Rogersville, Tennessee.

According to Gola Berry, Arden died in Jefferson Co., Tennessee. There is a Hardin Sanders, age 74, b. Virginia on the 1850 Jefferson Co. census. I

believe this entry is our Arden, though I do not think our Arden was born in Virginia since his father, Nahum, was living in Granville Co., NC by 1767.

However, both Granville Co. and Stokes Co. are on the Virginia line and it is possible that Nahum was in Virginia between 1776 when he signed the Oath

in Granville Co. and 1782 when he is found in Stokes Co. Also, Alice Ann Watkins reports that her aunt said that her ancestor, Benjamin Richard's

father's name was Hardin and he was a minister.

Arden lived in Dumplin, Tennessee. Dumplin is half way between Strawberry Plains and Dandridge on US Highway 70, 2 miles from I-40 at the Deep

Springs Exit. Dumplin Creek is said to have acquired its name when some men cooking dumplings accidently overturned the pot into the stream.

The 1836 List of Taxables for Hawkins co. Civil District 8 shows: Aaden, Davis, Nathan, John and Mary A. Sanders. This is probably Arden and his

sons Davis, Nahum, John and Mary Arthur, though the Mary A. might have been his brother Mary Arthur.

Living in the same district are Benjamin, James and Nancy Hagood. According to a letter by Gola Berry written in 1980, a Hagood family contained

children with the given names of Arden, Nahum, Benjamin, Jesse and Nancy. I'm still looking for a connection between the Sanders family and the

Hagood family. Arden's father, Nahum, had only one name with a date of birth in his diary: A. Hagood borne 17th Jan. 1739.

The 1868 list of registered voters for District 17, Hawkins Co., Tennessee includes (H)arden Sanders.

An Elizabeth Sanders is listed on the 1860 Hawkins Co., Tennessee census. Perhaps this is Arden Sanders' widow.

Gola Berry thought Elizabeth's maiden name was possibly Davis; however, since Arden and Elizabeth Sanders named their first son Clemmons, perhaps

Elizabeth's maiden name is Clemmons.

Merry Arthur Sanders moved from Stokes Co., NC to Hawkins Co., TN. His Hawkins Co., Tennessee land transactions included:

On February 2, 1813 Merryarter Sanders purchased 40 acres of land on the north side of the Holston River from Enoch Harrel(l) for $400; recorded

December 10, 1814, deed book 3, page 379.

Mary Arthur Sanders transferred 10 acres of land to Moses Jones for value received on January 22, 1818; recorded March 26, 1818; deed book 7, page

157.

On March 7, 1816 Mary Arthur Sanders sold 40 acres to Enock Harrel for $1,000; acknowledged on November 1816; deed book 7, page 157. And on that

same date, March 7, 1816, Merry Arthur bought 74 acres on the north side of the Holston for $1,000; deed book 7, page 159.

On February 28, 1825, Enoch Harrel sold Merriarther Sanders 13 acres on the northside of the Holston in Harrell's bend for $240; deed book 14, page

348.

On July 12, 1834 William P. Phipps purchased 106 acres on the north side of the Holsten from Maryarter Sanders for $1,000. This was the tract on which

said Sanders was living. Proved on 24,

Mary Arthur is shown in the Hickory Cove Baptist Church Minutes (1820-1836) in Rogersville, Tennessee. Mary Arthur and his wife, Nancy, joined that

church in January of 1834 and he was appointed Clerk of the Church in July of 1835. The pastor of Hickory Cove Baptist Church (1831-1836) was

Merry Arthur's brother, Arden. Mary Lu and Don have a copy of these original minutes many of which show both Mary Arthur and Arden's handwriting.

The 1830 and 1832 census records show Mary Arthur as "Merryarter," and the 1840 Hawkins Co. Census lists Mary Arthur as Mara Arthur. Merry

Arthur and his family moved to Clermont Co., Ohio between 1840 and 1850 and the 1850 Census, Miami Twp., Clermont Co., OH, pge 136, 2 Oct 1850

shows 1199-1199 Merryarter Sanders, age 70, male, farmer, b. NC. Also in the household are Mary Arthur's wife Nancy Sanders, age 63, Naum Sanders,

son, age 22, also a farmer, b. Tennessee and Elizabeth M. Sanders, daughter, age 17, female, b. Kentucky.

In the History of Hamilton Co., OH compiled by Henry A. Ford and Mrs. Kate Bond, 1881, pg. 399 it is noted that the second wife of William Smith

Buckingham was Miss Nancy Sanders, daughter of Merryarter Sanders of Tennessee. This marriage took place on September 22, 1835.

page 14

William Smith Buckingham's father, Levi Buckingham, a native of Delaware, emigrated to Ohio in 1788 and purchased a section of land in the Symmes

township. Levi went to Pennsylvania and persuaded his brother Enoch to go to Ohio with him. William Smith Buckingham was born in 1811 and Merry

Arthur's daughter, Nancy, was his second wife. He married his first wife, Elizabeth Harris, in 1834 and she died that same year.

Clermont Co., Ohio Wills, Estates, Guardianships 1851-1900, An Index p. 110 Merryarter Sanders will written 26 Jul 1856, probated 21 Oct 1856, Will

Book H, page 36. Clermont Co., Ohio information researched by Tom King, a Martha Sanders King descendant. Additionally, Mary Lu Sanders has a

copy of the will from the will book. His will lists 6 children: Susan Woodlief, Nancy Buckingham, Sarah Orr, Melinda Robinson, Naum Sanders and

Catherine Barbe. One grandchild, Amanda Orr was also listed, but it does not list his daughter Elizabeth who was shown in the 1850 census. Maryarter's

son-in-law, Moses F. Robinson, was executor. S. R. Hutchinson and Smith Buckingham were listed as securities with S. R. Hutchinson, Simeon Sanders

and Horatio Buckingham as appraisers of the estate. His entire estate was left to his "beloved wife Nancy." At her death everything was to be sold and

divided equally amongst his six children as shown in his will and his granddaughter Amanda Orr with an additional $100 to go to Amanda before the

distribution of the estate.

Note: Nahum Sanders' 1795 will shows Merry Arthur's first name spelled Mary; various other spellings are Mara, Merryarter and Maryarter.

Merry Arthur's tombstone in the Concord Cemetery shows his date of birth as December 4, 1779 and his date of death as September 25, 1856. According

to Rev. Merle C. Rummel, pastor of the Stonelick Church which is the only remaining Brethren church in Clermont Co., OH, the Concord Church was a

"Revival Church" after those in the Revival were kicked out by the Eastern Brethren Elders. This information leads me to believe that Merry Arthur's

father Nahum was pastor of a Brethren/German Baptist church. Many German Baptist Churches then became "regular" Baptist churches. Merry Arthur's

brother Arden was pastor of Hickory Cove Baptist Church in Hawkins Co., Tennessee.

will list this family under Nahum's son Richard. Additionally, Arden, Richard's brother, named his first son Clemmons.

Richard Saunders is shown on page 198 on the 1830 McMinn Co., Tennessee census.

There is also a Nahum Sanders listed in the 1830 McMinn Co. Census. Could this be another of Richard's sons? Arden's son Nahum is listed on the 1830

Biographical

Much of the Benjamin Sanders/Mary Naomi (Polly) Gibson information comes from Willanna Griffin, a descendant of Polly and Benjamin's son Arden;

Jim Austin, a descendant of Polly's sister Penina; Steve Dean a descendant of James Monroe Sanders; and Fred L. Layton, a Jordan descendant.

Benjamin's mother Susannah Sanders, Nahum Sanders' widow, deeded 220 acres of land on Belews Creek to Benjamin on July 9, 1810. It is thought that

Susanna then moved to Hawkins Co., TN with her son Arden. This Belews Creek property was part of a tract of land granted to Henry Hampton

registered in Surry Co. Book C folio 143. In 1816 Benjamin is listed with 93 acres in Belew's Creek District and the same acreage is listed for him in

1817, 1818 and 1819 in the Deep River District (this probably means that the boundaries for Belew's Creek and Deep River changed, not that Benjamin

moved). In 1820 the acreage is again listed, this time in Belew's Creek. In 1821, Benjamin is listed with 490 acres in Shores Reed District. In 1825 he is

listed with 246-1/2 acres in Germanton. There are no listings for Benjamin in 1826 to 1829 - about the same time that William Gibson, Sr. and his son

William Green Gibson are found in Alabama.

Benjamin and Polly moved to St. Clair Co., Alabama about 1832 and settled near Pleasant Hill. They sold their St. Clair Co. property in 1839 when they

page 16

moved to Lincoln Co., Tennessee. At age 60, Benjamin is found on the 1850 Lincoln Co., Tennessee census with his wife, Mary age 57 is shown along

with their children James Monroe, 17; William Lee, 27; Nancy L. 14; Eugenia, 11. Benjamin's occupation is listed as shoemaker. Benjamin, age 70, is

found on the 1860 Lincoln Co., Tennessee census with his wife Mary, 65. (Lincoln 144-200).

Another resource for this information came from the 1998 edition of "The Heritage of St. Clair Co., Alabama" which was obtained from the Pell City,

Alabama Library. Additional information came from Paulette Gilchrist's "St. Clair Ties" on the Ancestry World Tree Project.

Gola Berry's early research recorded Arden and Elizabeth Sanders' first born child as Clemmona. The handwritten record Gola was working from could

have easily been mistaken as an "a" instead of an "s" in the name Clemmons.

There is a Clemmons Sanders born between 1790 and 1800 who died on July 27, 1848 in McMinn Co., Tennessee. I believe this is Arden's first born and

wonder if Clemmons could have been either his mother's maiden name or his wife's maiden name. He is listed as Saunders, Clemons in the 1830 McMinn

Co. census on p. 155.

Also, I think the Richard Sanders listed on World Connect by Richard Dugan is Arden's brother Richard. This Richard named his first child Susannah

(1814-1875) and one of his sons Clemmons (1820-1862). For more information on this Richard's family, see Richard Sanders' biography.

Additional confirming information posted on Roots Web's McMinn Co., Tennessee Forum by Charles on April 2, 2000 in response to my query about

Arden Sanders and Elizabeth Liles.

Clemmons Sanders delivered the sermon at Hickory Cove Baptist Church in Rogersville, Tennessee on the fifth Saturday of December 1838. This was

the church were his father Arden had been both pastor and Church Clerk and where his uncle Mary Arthur I was Church Clerk and had left the church to

move to Clermont Co., Ohio. The last time Mary Arthur I attended church at Hickory Cove he sought a license to "preach the Godspell."

On July 11, 1839, Clemmons Sanders officiated at the marriage of William "Bill" Harvey (b. 1822 Knox Co., Tennessee; d. abt 1883 Rusk Co., Texas)

and Lucy Hunt (b. abt. 1822 in Tennessee; d. abt. 1901 Rusk Co., Texas) in Blount Co., Tennessee.

According to McMinn Co., Tennessee court records, in the minutes of September 1841-October 1899 CR5-485, October 1848, John M. Cantrell was

appointed Administrator of Clemons Sanders estate. John Cantrell was a close friend of Richard Dugan's great-great-grandfather. Most of the

information on this family comes from records obtained by Richard Dugan.

McMinn Will Book D 1841-1849, 590 contains inventory and account of sale by the Administration of Clemmons Sanders'estate and Will Book E 1849-

1856, 204, February 2, 1852 shows settlement of this estate by John Jack, Administrator successor to John Cantrell. Creditors take pro rata settlement.

Chancery Court, CC 228, filed May 25, 1855: Clement Sanders died leaving widow Margaret and the childred listed as his in the Family Editor. A. L.

Duggan, Richard Dugan's great-great-grandfather was appointed guardian ad litum for the minor heirs of said Clemmons Sanders. Additionally, there is a

mention of a petition on December 18, 1850 by John M. Cantrell, Administrator, to sell the Sanders land on Conesauga Creek.

CC 85, filed May 25, 1861: Clem Sanders died intestate in McMinn Co., July 27, 1848, leaving widow Margaret and 10 children, the youngest of whom

is Martha Jane, who has come of age in the past three years.

on October 16, 1834. Lewis' uncle, Benjamin moved to St. Clair Co., Alabama near Huntsville in 1832, so there is a possibility that Lewis moved nearby

Nahum is shown on the 1830 Hawkins Co., Tennessee census as a male between 20-30 years of age with one female between 20-30 and two females

under age 5. He is also shown on the 1840 Hawkins Co. census. There is also a Nahum Sanders listed on the McMinn Co. Census. Could Arden's

brother, Richard, who is known to have been living in McMinn Co. have a son named Nahum?

On December 10, 1832 Nahum purchased 65 acres on the north side of the Holston on the waters of Big Creek from James C. Groce of Union Co.,

Arkansas Territory for $250.00; proved February 1833; recorded October 4, 1833, deed book 14, page 303.

On March 8, 1841, George Cox and Nahum Sanders sold 155 acres on the north side of the Holston to James Y. Crawford. Proved October 19, 1841,

In 1860 we find Nahum, age 54; wife M., age 38; Andrew, 18; Rachel, 16; Nahum, 13; Mary, age 4. Others living in the household are: E. J. Rollins, age

14 (this is probably Emily Jane Rollins who married Fi Dillo after his first wife Sarah Bryan died); J. S. Rollins (m) age 13 (perhaps Emily Jane's brother);

also living in the family, probably Sanders kin, but so far unidentified were: N. (f), age 7; B. (m) age 5; M. A. (f), age 2; and Robert, age 4 months. I have

not identified the younger children as yet. It is obvious that Mary Rollins was Nahum's second wife since they did not marry until 1850; however, the

name of his first wife is unknown and the children were raised by Mary.

Initial information on this family came from Gola Berry and the Prentice Price papers. Additional information on this family was from Tom King and

Dick Lancaster.

SANDERS, Louisa 145

Louisa SANDERS was born on 29 May 1807. She was the daughter_of Arden SANDERS and Elizabeth SANDERS.

Biographical

There is a Louisa Sanders, 52, shown on the 1860 Fayette Co., Tennessee census. It is doubtful that this is Arden's daughter; more probably this is a

widow of a Mr. Sanders. The age is right, but with the following younger Sanders living with her, they are probably her children: B. W. (m), 35; Martha,

22; Louisa, 18; Lucy, 16; Rufus, 14 and Adaline, 30.

There is also a Lincoln Co., Tennessee marriage of a Louisa Sanders to Nathan Petty January 25, 1849.

1. Orlena SANDERS 1461 Birth, 1834

2. Medera SANDERS 1462 Birth, 1836

3. Elizabeth SANDERS 1463 Birth, 1840

Biographical

Davis Sanders is shown on the 1830 Hawkins Co. census. In 1840 he was married with a wife and four daughters per Hawkins

Co., TN census per Gola Berry's notes.

It appears that Davis stood as surety on two unpaid notes by Jesse Sanders, Jr. It is unclear whether this person is Davis'

brother, nephew, or son. At any rate, Jesse Sanders, Jr. owed Henry Watterson of Hawkins Co. $60.18 and on April 27, 1842

this debt remained unpaid. Davis also stood security on a $16 note to Benjamin Looney for Jesse Sanders which also remained

unpaid. Davis secured these debts in trust with 2 sorrel mares, one clock, one falling leaf table, one man's saddle, 2 sets of

gearing with bridles and collars, 1 bed and furniture, 1 pr. doubbtners (sp?), one shovel plow, one clovis, and one chest.

Acknowledged and recorded April 27, 1842; deed book 18, pg. 181.

The following may or may not be Arden's son Davis Sanders: Ancestry.com shows a "widow of Davis Sanders" reimbursement

of expenses while in command of a public vessel, 31st Congress, Session 1, Petition 391, referred to the Naval Affairs

Committee. Davis W. Sanders is shown in the 25th Illinois Infantry as a private in the Civil War Muster Rolls.

The book, Tennessee, The Volunteer State, 1769-1923, Vol. 4 lists a possible descendant, a prominent merchant of Memphis

Elwood Davis Sanders, founder and owner of Sanders & Company, a well known retail store located at 177 S. Main St. Elwood

Davis Sanders was born on his father's farm near Smyrna, on October 3, 1882, one of nine living children of Summer and Lucy

Emma Sanders. Davis' brother Jesse had a daughter named Summer, so it is possible that Davis named one of his children

Summer, also.

page 26

Biographical

The 1840 Hawkins Co., Tennessee census shows Maia Artur Sanders aged 20-30 with a wife of the same age. At that point in time, no children are listed.

The 1850 Hawkins Co., Tennessee, District 15, dated September 26th, #68, shows Mary Arthur Sanders, age 40, born Tennessee, a farmer with property

valued at $600. His wife, Louiza Loudeback was 30 at the time and it shows the following children: Hannah - 10, Fidello - 9, Mahaly - 8, Isaac - 7,

Perlena - 5 months old. All children were born in Tennessee. Also living with Merry Arthur were Hannah White Loudeback - 64, and Elizabeth

Loudeback - 40. It is assumed that these two Loudeback ladies were Louiza's mother and sister.

Mary Arthur disliked his name, so he used M.A. or Arthur Sanders instead. Though he was a farmer, he was deply religious, and he and his wife went out

into the hills and washed peoples feet. And, on January 1, 1834 Mary Arthur and Louisa A. Hope founded a church.

The old Sanders Bible which Gola Berry has has a written copy of Mary Arthur's ordination which states: "State of Tennessee Sevier County, this 20th

day of September 1879, we the Primitive Baptist Church of Christ, providence after due trial of our beloved brother Mary A. Sanders and believe him to

be sound in doctrine and therefore we set him apart Brother M. A. Sanders for ordination and call the following presbetery to ordination to wit: Daniel

Connister, S. Copeland and Humphrey Mount being present pro de to examine asid Brother M. A. Sanders and find him sound in the faith proceed to

ordain said brother to the minister and to all the ordinances of the gospell. We the undersigned presbetary have set our names.

Daniel Conater, Minister of the Gospell; Joseph S. Copeland, Minister of the Gospell."

And, on this date, September 20, 1879, Mary Arthur became the minister of a Primitive Baptist Church. "Jefferson County, Tennesse Families and

History - 1792-1996," states that "Elder Duke Kimbrough was pastor of the old log Dumplin Primitive Baptist Church for 43 years (1797-1879). The

church was built between Dumplin Creek and the John Cates home which still stands. Since Mary Arthur Sanders lived in Dumplin and became the

minister of "a Primitive Baptist Church in 1879," and Elder Kimbrough's last year of service to that church was 1879, it seems reasonable to assume that

Mary Arthur followed Elder Kimbrough as pastor of the Dumplin Primitive Baptist Church.

He owned various pieces of property in Districts #1, #7, and #11 in Jefferson Co., TN from 1871 to 1878. In 1879 his son Fi Dillo was seriously ill from

a respiratory infection contracted by sleeping outdoors during the Civil War and Merry Arthur visited him often. When Merry Arthur did not return from

one of his visits, the family went looking for him and found him lying face down in a creek, dead.

Mary Arthur is shown on the 1880 Jefferson Co., Tennessee census living in District 11in Dumplin which is the Piedmont area. This census lists his

name as Maryarter (the transcription lists it as Maryaster) and shows him as 67 yrs. old. This census also lists Betsy, 68, wife and Hannah, 40, daughter.

Mary Arthur and his wife Louisa Loudeback had a daughter Hannah Miranda who was born in 1840 who would have been 40 in 1880. However, Mary

Arthur would have been 70 when the census was taken. Unfortunately, census workers were known to make mistakes in recording names, as were those

transcribing the information into the census books. I do believe this is our Mary Arthur. If so, he must have married again after his wife Louisa died in

1870.

Note: as with his Uncle Merry Arthur, this Merry Arthur's name is shown on different documents with various spellings: Mary Arthur, Merryarter, Maia

Artur, Maryarter, etc.

Louiza LOUDEBACK was born in Hawkins Co., Tennessee on 11 Jan 1811. She died on 26 Jul 1870. She was the

Jesse was 5 ft. 11 inches with light complexion, dark hair and weighed 144 lbs. On December 8, 1834 Jesse sold to William H.

Smith for (illegible) and $1 the following: a certain roan mare, a sorrel colt, 23 head hogs, 1 cow, 2 calves, 1 yearling, 3 beds

and furniture, 6 chairs, 2 ovens, 2 pots, 1 cupboard, 50 bushels corn in the field. In trust, secure $30. Acknowledged December

8, 1834; deed book 15, page 154.

He served in the Mexican War having enlisted at San Antonio, Texas in October 1847 and was a private in Capt. Stevens

Company, Belle, Texas Volunteers. He was discharged in October 1848 and applied for a Land Bounty at Bexar, Texas. In

1906 he was listed as a farmer. In later years Jesse was blind and almost completly unable to use his hands, so under a special

account bill S-5496 during the 58th Congress 2nd session in 1905 his pension was increased to $20 per month. This Jessie L.

Sanders information supplied by Lee K. Biles, a descendant.

Jesse wrote at least two letters to his brother Merry Arthur. Gola Berry has the two surviving letters written on February 5, 1872

and May 13, 1882. The first letter was to a Mr. Williams and Jesse sent his brother, Merry Arthur, a page from it telling the

number of children he and Peggy had. In the second letter he tells about Benjamin Richard's fall from a horse and that he had

written his brother Davis several times, but had not heard from him. He also refers to "Nancy and Hagood." (Note: the name

Hagood keeps popping up. Hagood is first found in the names listed in Nahum's 1739 "pocket book." It is the only birth date

listed. The notation says: "Hagood, born Jan. 17th, 1739." I wonder if there was a man named Hagood Sanders. I have looked,

but have not been able to find one.)

Biographical

What happened to Malinda? Was she a Mrs. Robinson who died in Clermont Co., Ohio on January 10, 1866? Or, perhaps and

less likely, the Malinda Roberson who died in Clermont Co., Ohio in 1885. It makes more sense that she was the Mrs. Robinson

who died in 1866. Moses F. Robinson died in 1879 and Harriet M. Robinson, relationship unknown, was appointed guardian of

Eva E. Robinson.

If Eva E. Robinson was the Eva Robinsin who died August 31, 1904 at the age of 32, she would have been 12 years old when

Harriet became her guardian in 1884. However, if Malinda died in 1866, then the Eva who died at the age of 32 in 1904 would

not have been Malinda's daughter.

Moses F. Robinson was the executor of his father-in-law's estate in 1856. He was a widower when he married his second wife, Malinda Sanders, daughter

of Mary Arthur Sanders and his wife Nancy. He founded Miamiville in Clermont Co., OH. Since I do not know the ages of all of Moses' children, I do

not know which belong to Malinda Sanders, or to his first wife. Based on the date of Malinda's and Moses' marriage I am assuming that John M. and

Charles were children of Moses' first wife and Anna and Eva were Melinda's childre.

His father, Samuel Robinson, died when Moses was 11 years old and John Emory was appointed guardian to both Moses and his 16 yr. old brother

William per Court document dated March 22, 1825.

Based on the facts that (1) Nahum named his son William Woodlief Sanders and (2) Nahum, the son of Mary Arthur Sanders I, had a sister, Susan, who

was 12 years older than he, married Riley Young Woodlief, Jr. and named her first child William Woodlief, I believe we are speaking of the same Nahum

Sanders.

Also, per Civil War Muster Rolls on Ancestry.com a Nahum Sanders served as a Private in Co. K in the 24th and in Co. I in the 67th Indiana Infantry.

The records are in Box 000540, extraction #0067, records #00000392 and 00000393. Additionally, we find a marriage record in Decatur Co., Indiana for

Nahum Sanders and Julia A. Evens March 17, 1896 in Decatur Co., Indiana. Julia is listed as widow on Nahum's Civil War Pension - Kansas application

#442235, certificate #588594, and Indiana application #1061223, certificate #827890. If this is Mary Arthur's son Nahum, he remarried in 1896 at age 69.

Just more pieces to the puzzle - or do we have another Nahum?

Nahum is found on the 1880 Benton Township, Daviess Co., Missouri Census under the Cooper surname. Also listed in his household are his wife

Elizabeth, sons Arter, William W., and Thomas and daughters Jennie and Nannie Cooper. Luvenia Cooper, age 2 born Missouri, Nannie Cooper's

daughter is also listed in his household. Nahum's occupation is listed as Cancer Doctor. His father's birthplace is listed as North Carolina and mother's as

Tennessee. This census record is also listed on the Family History Library Film 1254684, NA Film Number T9-0684, page 135B.

From the Watson/McDaniel upload on Ancestry.com: Josephine Caroline Moffett states in her "Family Record" that Merry Arthur and his brother John

came to Lincoln Co., Georgia from Warren Co., GA. In the winter of 1822 he sold his land in Lincoln Co., and purchased land in Crawford Co., Georgia.

On his way to his new purchase, he stopped in Jasper Co., Georgia at the home of David Hunter to pack meat and supplies to carry with him and there he

took pneumonia and died leaving his wife with nine children. Tradition is that they came from Virginia.
